304 A with 3.07 gears?

I have a '73 1210 step side pu. Sticker under hood says 392 but stamp on block says 304 a. I am assuming that an engine swap has taken place at some time.

I have just swapped out rear axle (factory Dana 60 4.10) to a '78 Ford f350 (single) Dana 61 with 3.07 gears thinking I had a 392. To the best of my knowledge the gearbox is a t19 4 speed.

Anyone have any experience with load/tow capacity effects with the 304 and a 3.07 dif ratio? Good? Bad? As tow rig.

Footnote: when getting adapter u-joint for shaft to pinion discovered shaft is 1310 not 1210.

IH recommended the 304 only for light duty towing. IH did not recommend the use of an "equalizer" hitch with the 304. So, to me, basically that means towing a utility trailer to the dump or a light fishing boat to the lake.

The "highest" (lowest numerical) ratio IH recommended with a 304 was 3.54.

Actually, I find it hard to believe that Ford supplied a f350 d60 with a 3.07 ratio...

My understanding is that the rear axle/dif came out of a '78 camper special with a 460 v8. The Dana 61 is tagged as a 3.07 ratio. I am by no means an expert on this issue but from what I can tell of pinion to tire rotation it seems correct. Also, the carrier is stamped 3.07.

I cannot find consistent hp and torque ratings for the 304 in my online research. Would you happen to have factory specs?

Probably will not find consistent numbers because they varied over the years - as more "smog" was added(?).

I have 1971 numbers for a 304 - 193 hp / 276 torque

same info / year states a 392 at 253 hp while the data plate in my 73 t/a (door jamp) has the 392 rated at 235 hp(memory?).

That makes sense and smog was a big incentive for me to buy my truck. 0% smog under hood. No egr, pump, cat... Nothing!

I am probably going to have to track down the block numbers so I can at least find out what year it is. Have to clean it first. Thanks for the input.

Thanks Robert! This info will help a lot. Despite the weather I am crawling around the old beast today and will make a point of identifying the block number/letter you refer to.
