1973 Scout II

I am having a 1973 Scout II redone for me. The truck needs a new engine and I am getting a lot of different opinions on what to do. Any suggestions and why? Keep in mind that I have no mechanical skills and want what would be most dependable.

Welcome

not to nit pick, but a little more info might be helpful. Which motor and transmission(auto or manual) is currently installed? What are you having done to your 73? Are you having this built for off-road use only or highway mall cruising? Or both?

What opinions are you being told on what to do? Why not rebuild what your Scout came with originally? We can't tell you why you're getting what ever opinions because we can't read through this internet psychic hot line.

Sorry about the lack of information. It is partially because I don't what I am talking about. This is mainly for street use, just general cruising. The person who is doing the work for me said rebuilding the current would cost close to the same as getting another remanufactured 345 which was his first suggestion. Quoted around $3100. I was concerned about having a carbureted engine so then he suggested a remanufactured 1990 camero 350 TBI. Thanks for any help

That quote seems about average for these IH motors. Whether it being rebuilt or re-manufactured. Sticking around this, and others, forum you just might learn a thing or two about these ole iron heavy classics. We won't bite your hands off for asking questions. The 345 is a good slow turning torquey of a motor. And if maintained well can out live any chebby motor or even a furd. TBI(efi) can be adapted to the IH motors. There is a section on the board that talks a lot about fuel injection.

Do you have an automatic transmission or a manual(stick & clutch)?

Also, if you're looking for parts, check out the store Link up on the top of the page. IH Parts America is top notch when it comes to sourcing parts and service for IH vehicles.
