1964 Travelall - 304 Rebuild

Not too long into the new year....
I hope to pull the 304 out of my Travelall for a rebuild.

Anyone know if the following are not too hard to come by...?
- Pistons & Rings
- Cams & Lifters
- Rod & Main Bearings
- Gasket Set

I know I will need to have the specs on how far over for the pistons, how far under for the bearings.
Just wondering if parts are readily available.
I need to have this thing back on the road & useful.

Thanks & Happy New Year!

I had my 304 rebuilt 2 years ago. My machinist did all the cleaning and inspections and ordered all the parts. I put it together. I didn't ask him where he got the parts but it wasn't an issue. I think it was cheaper for him to buy all the parts rather than me having to buy it.

Whoa, that looks amazing! I will be asking many questions when I get to mine, so I can do the build as stock looking as possible, with the engine & the engine bay.

Why are you pulling it to rebuild it. Does it have low compression? Is it running like shit?

Is the cam bad, are the lifters bad?

If not keep it simple stupid applies here.

Depending on the year, there were piston changes, and head changes. Later stuff is easier to get than early stuff.

Lifters on the market are questionable.

IHPA no longer offers rebuild service for these engines due to quality of rebuild parts I recall seeing in one of their notices.

It smokes like a chimney.
The compression is south of 100 per cylinder.
It's noisy & leaky & smokey & sputtery.
It is as tired as Lili Von Shtupp.
(Sorry - Blazing Saddles reference)

Once I pull it I will determine what year the block is (& the heads, I guess).
Sounds like noting the year(s) of the components may help when ordering parts.
Thanks

Rebuild parts can be hit and miss on these as of late. Especially if you have contoured pistons which your 1962 would have come factory with. When you have the engine torn down and know what size bearings and pistons you need, reach out to our parts staff and they will help as best we can. 530-274-1795

wonder if the rings are carbonded up ? dead set on the rebuild or would you want to try some oil flushes and piston soaks ?

I'm more dead set on the rebuild. It has been a long time coming (like 10-years). The clutch & trans are good. The brakes have been gone through. Everything in the engine bay is super smokey & leaky. Aside from the radiator, nothing has been gone through since who knows when (before I bought it). But thank you for suggesting the ring carbon; which is entirely possible as well as all the other symptoms.

You might want to pull the heads and pan to inspect the cylinders and bearings before making a decision. You might be pleasantly surprised with what you find.
