196 turbo cam questions

Mike,
insightful article, but I have a question. I have an ic 196 in a 1980, and it had the smog stuff on it. Any idea as to what type of cam retard would have been used on these fours? Here's why I'm asking. This rig is a project vehicle (hopefully not long term) that I hope to give a lung-transplant to, but before I add the 152t manifolding, trw turbo w/ f/f comp/turbine combination, sitting on my bench, and late yh sidedraft, which fits nicely, by the way, I'd like to establish the best cam/crank timing (should anything even be changed, and how would I know) and figger out if I need to freshen the head a bit, that a felpro head gasket would handle the anticipated 9 lbs. Boost or do I use an original shim style! I'm not a novice to these devices but am trying to figure out exactly what issues the IH mill will have! Is this the right forum, or do you want to move it to your killer-fourbanger thread? Not trying to build a screamer, just something that will puuuuullllll under load and higher elevations.

Re: Timing Set Indexing For SV and 4 CYL APP's

Based upon parts list research for all variations of both sv and I-4 engines, I've found no reference that any diddling was ever done regarding either the cam grinds or the cam drive/timing as part of the emissions packages.

We (really meaning Robert) have certainly not read samples of all oem camshafts even though there are only a very few part numbers given in the literature.

Like you, I assumed way back when that many cams were played with for each tier of emissions and each engine application, same kinda thing chryfordrolet did with many camshaft specs used all over the place. But no evidence exists of that practice for ihc. So in essence, it makes camshaft and cam drive selection real easy! And the oem I-4 cam timing matches right up with the specs for the sv motors.

If anyone can come up with verified samples of alternative cams by part number, then I know Robert would be more than happy to read 'em and compare with the data he's developed. This is the only way we have now of determining what this stuff is and separating fact from common urban myth that has floated on these forums for years.

Of the two stroker I-4 motors that Robert and I are involved with, he's doing a far more radical version including turbo and fabricated manifold. Mine is more of a poor-boy approach so that we'll be able to compare the end result and gauge the cost/benefit sitch!

In the next few weeks, I'll be continuing the stroker 152 build on my end (thanks to ihon's own mikee dimock I now have a really rotten 196 crank that needs much luv). I'll depend upon Robert to come up with the right piston/rod combo we're gonna use since we're planning to "split" a set of eight rods/pistons between us in order to hold cost using off-the-shelf hi-per parts for sbc apps.

Robert can help ya with the cam timing issue, he's the numbers dude around here since math makes my head hurt bad!

I did a study on all availible oem and after market sv timing sets, they all install in the same location. If one was to research 4 banger cam shafts sold by IH including the one in your 1980 196 they would see only one part number. One would determine from that that the smog engines did not have any different cam timing from non smog engines.
