196 Question 1: Oil Filler Tube Hole

I just swapped my 152 for a 196 out of an 800 and there a few questions I had on what is what...

Question 1: the 152 had a hose that provided a connection from the oil filler tube to the air filter.

My existing air filter on the 196 doesn't have a connection point for the hose - can I just plug the filler cap with a rubber boot of sorts? Attached is a picture of where the hose attached to the filler cap.

You should not simply block the nipple on the filler tube. As the pcv valve sucks out the air from the crankcase you must allow new clean air back in. Also under high power, when there is little to no vacuum to draw out the air, the nipple becomes the blow by exit.
You don't want excessive pressure or vacuum inside the engine.
Hook the nipple back like it was originally. It needs to be plumbed to a clean air source like the air cleaner. Any reason you can't drill the 196 air filter and thread the proper sized hose fitting in. That is the right way to go.

Kinda what I thought. I was having brain fade last night when trying to explain this.

The air filter base that came with the 196 was fabed up from a combination of a hub cap, lamp shade base and some warning sign that was cut round to hold the filter in place. There maybe some after market fittings that can be used to modify that base to accept the hose for that breather.

The air filter base off the 152 was cracked and I don't think it was the proper one to begin with

I hooked up an oil/air filter directly to the oil filler tube hole. Looks like it will work great...

Now just need to make sure water dripping on start up is from the hoses and not the just installed brand new brass block plugs.
