My 196 block just got the ok from the machine shop and I have a few questions. This 196 is out of an 800, after tear down and magna flux my machine shop said I have a decent block.
1. Shop said cylinder walls are good and could be machined out .020, is it better to go bigger or is the .020 enough.
2. Pistons? I have a quote from Jeff at ihon for flat top pistons, its my understanding that if I use these I need to get a different head? If so which one is it and what do I need to do to it to make it work or make it better. Will the header I have work with the new head? If its too much hassle I can get another quote from him for dish pistons.
3. I sent my cam off to have a preformance re grind done, I understand there are a few durations to choose from, any ideas.
4. Budget is 2.5k, my quote from the machine shop is $850 for hone, bore, deck, grind, and balance. Im in 200 for the cam and 175 for the carb and close to 700 for the pistons, rings, ect. In short I have a few hundred left and I want to make sure im spending it doing the right things to get the most out of this motor.
I have a pertronics setup for this motor and a header, mr maben should have my carb if ups is taking care of business. The rig its going into is a 64 Scout 80, I have a t-18 four speed trans with transfer case with d44 front and rear running 33" tires. This is a daily driver-bar hopper rig no trails for this queen. Any ideas or help is greatly appricated.
Thanks
