Identify this part please??

Wondering if anyone can identify the this part and tell me what it’s purpose is? I am rebuilding my engine and there was a wire coming off the “bat” terminal. There is also writing on it “choke cont”. Thinking it’s for the choke? I’ve replaced the carb with one that has an electric choke, wondering if this part is needed anymore? Thanks

this is a wild guess-- it looks like some sort of voltage reducer to me. BAT terminal would be input from the battery.
did your old carb have some sort of electric dash pot ?

I don’t think my old carb had a dash pot….the wire coming off the “bat” terminal was tied into the wire going to the electric choke on my carb. If it is a voltage regulator, what’s the worst that could happen if I tried to start the engine without it hooked up? My new carb is a Holley with electric choke, I don’t read anywhere in the carb instructions that a reduced voltage is required. Thanks for your reply

make sure your new electric choke gets a good supply of full 12 Volts. if its not a good supply of current and your in a cold climate you will always be fighting a choke that dosent want to fully open. i went through it for many winters. going down the highway in 10 degree weather, cold air blowing through the engine compartment would re activate the choke.

I’ll make sure to do some testing of the power source. Does the choke require constant 12v to operate or just 12v at startup?

It is the Electric Choke Control Switch. Shuts off the electric choke when the choke housing gets to 130 degrees. It's shown in my D-Series service manual and says used (some applications) on 304, 345, and on the 400 AMC engine.

You have peaked my curiosity. Which manual and where in the book did you find this? In all my years I think I have seen the aforementioned part just once and remember then it looked nothing like a factory installed part. I see nothing like it in the parts book.

They are single-stage resistance based choke activation modules. Used in emissions control vehicles typically equipped with a Thermoquad.

thanks Zaedster…is the choke activation module needed on a new carb? Guessing it’s a leftover from the old carb that was on the vehicle when I bought the truck

Jeff, what I found is in the CTS-2306 Light Duty Service Manual, Fuel System Section Z for the Carb Model 2210C, page 21-22.

Thank you. I'll have to educate myself further on it as I haven't seen one ever installed on an IH.

In the MT-136 parts book, figure 12-35 and 12-36. Also shown the the MT-130 Scout parts book, figure 12-61. IH part number 448551C1, Chrysler part number 3656730.
