67 Scout 800 oily slipping clutch

When I bought my 1967 scout 800 196 engine with a T98 transmission the cover under the truck has a hole in it and I noticed a small oil drip from it. But wasn't sure. So I sealed the hole. Go figure a few months later I'm going up a hill and the clutch started to slip. Thought maybe a spring broke or something.

While inspecting everything I opened the hole and I would say maybe 1.5 quarts poured out.

I'm hoping I can clean the clutch. But I imagine I'll probably have to replace it.

Any chance I can clean it? And better yet any chance I don't have to pull the trans? Haha. Doubtful

You will need to remove the transmission, remove & replace the rear main seal (which is leaking engine oil into the bellhousing) and possibly add a speedi-sleeve to the crankshaft.
Inspect and reinstall the clutch or replace the clutch, depending on condition.
Install new pilot bearing and new throw-out bearing either way.
Reinstall the transmission.
Inspect transmission mount and replace if necessary.
 
With 1.5 qts it has to be a bad rear main seal leaking. That can be changed during when the flywheel is off.

I once had a similar situation with a '43 Burma jeep. It had a top inspection cover on the bell housing. I filled the bell housing up half way with water and simple green, put the trans in 3rd, rev'ed the engine and let the clutch out a few times. After draining, the clutch never slipped again.

If I did that would I also have to worry about rusting on the fly wheel or? Wonder if I could do roughly the same
 
My experience is once the clutch is wet,oily, that's it. You might clean it enough to make it go; but anytime soon with a load such as towing or mud or sand cruising you'll smell it.

Remember to seal the flywheel mounting bolts too!! They are known leakers without sealant. I use Permatex Type 2
