Auto hub stiff

Hello I put a set of rebuilt auto hubs on the Scout many many years ago. In the last few years the dial is getting stiffer to turn from locked to auto. It's gotten to the point where the front wheel needs to be jacked up and the wheel rocked back and forth while pushing on the dial. I've opened the hub up and there is plenty of fresh grease in there. I can't see any obvious problem, any have any suggestions as to what to look for to fix it???

My experience has been to use motor oil for lubricant, and never use wheel bearing grease. Do not pack your locking hubs with wheel bearing grease!!!
A small amount of white lithium grease (lubriplate) on moving surfaces is ok.
Remove, clean, re-oil whenever they start to get stiff or have more resistance to turning than usual.
They should be checked (cleaned, inspected, & re-oiled) every two years anyway. More often the more mud & water you drive in.
Again, this has been my experience for the past 35 years.

Ok I guess mine are a decade or so over due. I think that I'll clean and then soak the outer hub in motor oil and see if that resolves the issue.

Sadly I think the front cam bearing spun and damaged a tooth on the timing gear. So fixing the knocking needs to be done before fixing the locking hub. I'll post the results when I get'er done.
