stalling 2300

Bought a 68 Scout 800 a month ago. Supposedly parked 20yrs ago after a cross country trip. The po told me it is a v8/266. Was rebuilt just prior to trip. Even has reciepts.

The carb was getting no gas. I put in an aftermarket fuel pump, and new line to carb. This is being fed by a gas can.

After a couple of cranks she started right up. She will idle like that till it runs out of gas.

Problem 1, the choke has to stay completely closed to keep running. Even when warmed up.

Problem 2, I can get in gear and get it moving for 50 ft then dies. After pumpin pedal a few times it will star right up and idle forever.

I see 2 vacum takeoffs. 1 for the windshield wiper(which works) and 1 to the distributer. I took this one off, and noticed no change in idle. I am not getting any vacumn on this even when I rev the engine.

Anybody have any ideas for the next step.

The average life expectancy for a carburetor is about 2 years of daily driving activity using today's fuel. Carburetor overhaul was a part of what we called "major tune-up" back in the day.

To expect any carburetor to function after 20+ (or even 2+) years of non-func is totally unreasonable! Your entire fuel system from the tanks forward needs to be completely douched and refreshed, including the tank selector valve. Same for the fuel pump, otherwise you will fight an endless battle in dealing with fuel starvation, stalling, carburetor fuel bowl overflow, etc.

There is no more common carburetor on the planet than the venerable Holley 2300. And no carburetor more often reconditioned.

Our carburetor services/prices are shown in this thread:

And if you search this sub-forum, you will be covered up with information regarding the 2300 and how to deal with it.

Thanx for the quick response. My first thought was to send the carb to you. After reading all the threads about ignition being more important I started second guessing myself.

Ill call tomorrow to set this up.

When dealing with this old junk everything is important!

The ignition stuff is pretty easy to visualize and simply pull maintenance by replacing the "consumables" such as breaker points, spark plugs, plug cables, distributor cap and rotor, etc. Again...back in the day, all that was simple "minor tune-up" stuff done at 12>15k mile intervals.

And back then, we burned real gasoline, not this government-forced alky-crap that is destroying everything it comes in contact with!

We seem to be doing quite a few carb jobs for folks in the ny area...yawl just bringing 'em out of storage after the arrival of summer out there??

The most important point to verify on these rigs that have set for so many years, is the proper lubrication of the valve train:

Everyone is anxious to make these motors fire off and run when they acquire projects like these (me included!!)...but unless ya got a motor that is oilin' properly, all the rest of the stuff is secondary and just cash down the rathole if the motor ain't an oiler!

Crank up a "reader's rides" thread for your rig so we can see whatcha got! That also helps us understand the big picture under the hood as far as what the setup is and what needs attention!

Thanks for considering IH Parts America for your project needs!
