Have a 76 Scout ll with 727trans and 304 eng. Does the kickdown rod have anything to hold it in the hole on the arm on the transmission or does it just sit in there?

Those rods were/are retained in the throttle pressure lever in two possible manners...
One method used a clip that slides over the flat portion of the lever, then rod drops in and the leg of the clip snaps onto the rod to retain it. I haven't been able to find those clips in years, they are for a 5/16" shaft, the largest I can buy now are 1/4".
The other method simply had a hole for a cotter pin drilled across the portion that mounts in the throttle pressure lever. Those were real sloppy in the hole but they still worked ok though they sometimes rattle.
On many chrysler apps back in the 60's/70's, a plastic bushing was inserted in the lever hole, then the kickdown rod simply snapped into the bushing to retain it. Again, I've not been able to locate those in years and my wholsale tranny supply house can't find 'em either.
