valve springs for a 196?

What do you all recommend when it comes to valve springs on a a later 196, 800 head (non-contoured piston style). Should I reuse my old ones? I've heard it argued that if you place stiffer springs than stock that you will crack your rocker arms. Any suggestions?

When the head work is done, the machine shop of choice should test the valve springs and recommend any replacement.

"cracking" of the rocker arms due to excessive spring pressure? Not hardly!

Again, unless you are spending thousands of bucks in a complete re-design of this engine (resulting in a non-streetable application), there is no way to over-rev one of these motors, even with all the typical performance mods. Fresh oem-grade valve springs are an excellent choice if a replacement is needed. You are talking about an engine that will struggle to see 5000rpm.

If the machine shop doing the head is knowledgeable in performance valve train work, then they will know what to do regarding valve seat spring pressure and how to verify/correct.

Some of the build ups I've read, recommend replacing the stock valve springs with small block Chevy springs to obtain higher rpms. Any word on this if this is a good idea?
