It works great! Easy to program. This is going to be my primary radio and will be moved around from vehicle to vehicle.

2) kenwood th-215 handheld 5 watt 2m radio

Bought at a garage sale for $15.

Antenna:

I have a hustler rx-2 magnetic mount 5/8 wave antenna.

It is proving to be a little touchy and will require tuning with an swr meter. So it is not an ideal choice if you just want to plug and play.

I found the larsen 2/70 nmo antennna to be an excellent antenna. Plug and play as advertised. Cost a bunch more though. Its a dual band, but there is a mono band version available for a little less.

Well, I'm stuck on this yeasu stuff, some of which I bought at hro and some that followed me home, from undisclosed sources.
It pays to know some of the old timers!
In the basement:
ft 450at
ft8800

In the rigs the old version of this:
ft 7800
And this:
ft-10r
Then one of these:
vx8r

Mobile antennas are larsen 2/70nmo
and the antennas connected to the basement are a g5rv (hf)
and one of these:
comet dual band base gp-9

I have the larsen nmo 2/70 mounted in uber Scout and some form of dual band mag mount that I transfer between the other rigs. When I move the radio around.

Down here we use the yaesu ft8800 and ft60 handheld.
Why? Thats what the rubicon trail foundation radio guy (john arnez) recommended. This way we can help each other with programming the radio's.

I have the ft7800 and the ft60. Plus I have the software for the ft60, which makes programming a breeze.

Cost $25 for the software and worth it. Bought a cable off of e-bay for like $6 to program it. We program the radios to monitor the forest service channel, the helicopter rescue folks, couple simplex channels and the 2 repeaters on the rubicon trail. Fordyce you can use you other radio (cell phone.)
