thanks michael, I will look at it when I pick it up and figure out which one it is. I noticed that it waited till hi revs to shift, but shifts were quick and had no slipping, and all gears worked. So there May an issue with it.
I was reading some past posts and is it true that there are no hard parts available for this trans? How hard is it to go to a 727 and reuse the d-20 thats in there?
A borg warner tranny is definitely rebuildable!! But not many pro tranny guys left working that know anything about 'em. All rebuild parts are certainly available from the wholesale suppliers I deal with but it's not something you will ever find in cruising around on the I-net as there is no market for that stuff! Especially regarding anything for older transmissions, you don't find this stuff on the 'net...that stuff comes from wholesale transmission parts warehouse distributors and they don't sell to the public on the 'net.
Yes...some parts used in the Ford fmx will interchange, but many others will not. Don't believe the typical bs that the bw 11 is "just a Ford", "the same as Ford", "same as jaguar", etc. They are part of the design series, but there were many variations produced over the years, the unit used in scout800/Scout II and fullsize stuff are all somewhat unique o the IH platforms.
The 727 is far easier to deal with simply because they are more numerous over the years and parts are super-available in all aspects. But...the bw is every bit as decent a tranny as the 727 for it's intended purpose.
The problem with swapping around trannys will be the output gear for the married d20 application if you wanna re-use the d20 mated to the bw 11. A bw 11 uses a different spline count and different helix angle as compared to the 727 version. If you have a 727 with a good output gear (or as some refer to it...the bull gear), then the mating gears in the d20 can be swapped for the correct ones when it undergoes overhaul. But very limited new parts for doing this are available, we do have some nice used stuff available however. All the gears in the Dana/spicer transfer cases have part numbers stamped in...that makes it pretty easy to determine the correct gear/parts mix for an entire assembly....beginning with matching the case guts to the bull gear intended for use. Many...many of the Scout 800 and Scout II transfer cases are running around out there with mismatched guts...then the folks that run that kind of stuff blame breakage on the "weak d20" which is pure bs!
Used bull gears for either IH application now carry a very premium price used...the similar items for the Jeep and Bronco applications are far more numerous and available.
Don't sweat the details of this tranny deal until ya are able to determine whatcha got and what kinda shape it's in!
If you do end up considering a swap, then ya really need to find a donor tranny/tc package. You need everything from the crankshaft hub spacer back most especially the flex plate). And ya also need the donor throttle pressure control stuff from a similar sii...or go with a fabricated lokar cable "kickdown" system as described in other threads here on the forum.
