1975 / 200 / 392 Smog Equip

Well I picked up a couple of 1975 1 ton binders, now I have to find a way to get them through the washoe county nv smog emissions testing.

I guess I am needing to know what smog equipment is required or was produced on an ihc 75 200?

The smog thing is and can be a show stopper.

Any recommendations will be appreciated.

I think that is going to be hard... Too many variations..

I would suggest the IH service manual, but I am not sure if it would show all the variations.

I think the smog rules were still separated based on fed and California.

Pickups were considered "trucks" and had different "regs" versus t/as / Scout iis. And, the "regs" were gvw based.

I think the best solution is to go to smog station and tell them you are thinking of buying a 1975 IH 200 and ask them if they would print out the required smog equipment for it to pass smog so that you can check if you want to buy it or not...

I agree with Robert...have the "state" tell you what the standards are for that vin vehicle in Nevada for that production era.

And...at that point, there were the 49-state equipment standards (and that varied by gvwr, not the "200" designation), and the "California" version. Iirc, the "cut" for emissions for the 1975/76 time frame was 8600lb. Gvwr and above had evaporative emissions/egr/pcv/divorced choke/emissions carb calibrations only.

And many times, we see 49 state rigs that were later sold into kalifornikate and then either paid that extortionary "exemption" fee or had the kali-emissions components installed/certified at the dealership.

And of course, kali vehicles were sold into other states as well, even new. Especially in states adjacent to kali as many times dealers "traded" new vehicles (and still do).

What is the m/y cutoff for smogging in washoe county, is it different from the rest of the state?? I know that at one point reno/carson city was a "non-attainment" region as far as the feds were concerned and were trying to force more stringent regs and eliminating rolling exemptions as they did in other states.

I do have some data regarding emissions equipment for some IH vehicles of that era, but we need to know the gvwr that is posted on the serial/vin data plate as that is the "number" that counts...both for id of equipment and for what the standards are for your air quality "region" there in washoe county or whatever Nevada refers to for the aqm district.

Magnum04rt,
I have a 1975 200 1 ton 4x4 with 10,000 gvw. Originally sold in wisconsin as a cab & chassis and completed for sale and used in michigan as a fire truck.
The only emission equipment it has is a pcv system, and the thermostatic air cleaner.
It has a 392 with thermo-quad carb w/divorced choke.
No air pump, no fuel evap system, no egr, no cat. Etc.

Let me know if I can be of any assistance.

In aaddition to the pieces michael mayben listed, if the egr valve is required, there are probably 1 / 2 tvs (thermo vacuum switch) switches.

They are placed in the intake manifold at various spots (my 73 CA smog 392 has 3; one in the water / thermostat neck).

It is doubtful that it is still there, but there was (is?) a "sticker" / "decal" on the top of the air cleaner air horn that shows the routing of the vacuum lines between the egr / switches / / carb / distributor. There are similiar diagrams in the IH service manual.

The gvwr is 10,000

the m/y cutoff for smog emissions in washoe county, nv is 1968 and later have to meet emission standards.

The local smog shop states that the only physical item they will inspect for is non-vented gas caps.......other than that one must pass the tail pipe test.
From what I can determine....if I want an emissions exemption, I would have to register as a classic and not drive the truck more than 2500 miles per year.......the big catch here is the vehicle will have to undergo a physical inspection and a test at the dmv site.

Hey man, let me know how that goes, I'm in truckee right now where my '75 is exempt(go figure!) but I'm in escrow in a house in reno and going to be moving there within a month. I'm pretty curious to see how the smog thing goes.

So far, looks like all that is required is pcv=positive crankcase ventilation and an acl=air cleaner.....so long as the truck wasn't a CA truck....meaning, originally manufactured to be sold in CA.

My truck came with the California "emissions package", which is still installed. Does it not pass visual or 5 gas because of the "emission package" in reno?

If your 75 still has all of the CA emission stuff still on board, I am guessing you should be fine in terms of passing the physical inspection.
