I am changing from a "cold-natured" 2bbl setup to a 4bbl. Anyone heard of a "heatshield" gasket that goes between the new mani and the carb? My nuts-n-bolts guy claims that I need this gasket to keep the heat from the engine from boiling the gas in the carbs. What is this gasket called and does anyone know where to find it?

I moved this thread to the "carb tech" sub-forum.

We need much more definitive description of what carb and manifold setup you are converting to. There are several ways to achieve a "heat dam"...depends entirely on which manifold, which carb. Hood clearance has much to do with this subject, even on a pickup/t'all.

Depending upon your setup, we have a few options for doing this, it's imperative in my book that heat dam setup of some type be used under any ihc product hood.

Don't know what ya mean by "cold-natured". That indicates some definite issue regarding your existing carburetion choke/cold start system. A heat shield/dam will do nothing for that issue.

We need details man in order to be able to give ya our advice!

This '72 ihc is a 1/2 ton model 1110 with a 345ci. Serial number b13108h274808.
The carb number is 18501, but it does not have a metal tag, this number is from the base plate of the carb itself.

The heat dam (or heat shield) extends out severalninchesnin both directions.

Any suggestions as to where I can find one of these?

If you mean the carb is a Holley 4v modular as discussed in this sticky thread:

http://www.forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/carb-tech/513-Holley-41xx-modular-series-carb-stuff.html

Then what you have is most likely a Holley list 1850-1. That is a very common aftermarket performance replacement carb.

The Holley list number will never be found on the "baseplate" on a modular unit. It is always gonna be stamped into the driver side air horn along with a date code and if it's an oem carb, an oem part number also.

Any decent parts house can order (my local sources keep these hanging on the wall) a Holley base gasket and studs, p/n 108-51 as shown in post #4 in the above referenced thread.

Your "serial (or vin) number" doesn't mean anything in this regard...those numbers don't "decode" in the same manner as the later "federal" 17 digit vin which came into play after 1972 or so.

But what does make the most difference in dealing with issues like this are clear, well-focused/composed pics regarding the subject area. Otherwise we go back and forth for several days with assumptions, etc. That lead to all sorts of confusion.

It's entirely possible the carb you are referencing is a carter thermoquad, those do have an id number stamped into the passenger side front mounting boss, the ihc versions originally had a metal tag under a bowl screw which carried the carter id along with an ihc part number.

Again...without pics, there is no way I can positively id what you have based upon your description...anything else is a wag.
