rocker shafts

I was wondering if anyone knew where to find new nine stand rocker shafts? I rember seeing whole rocker shaft assemblies somwhere I just cant remember where.

There May be some nos nine stand shafts out there, but they have not been available in the supply chain for some years.

If your nine stands shafts are beyond use, then most likely the rockers that ran on those stands have bushings that are worn beyond limits also. And likewise, the two rebuilders of rocker components who used to provide this service, no longer deal with 'em since replacement rocker bushings were also discontinued several years ago.

All of this "rocker-related" information is contained in various threads in this sub-forum where we've laid out several options including a full or "semi" conversion to five stand shafts.

Just a thought on the nla 9 stand shafts.

Why couldn't we take the 5 stand/bolt shafts and carbide the 4 other bolt holes?

That is certainly doable!

What would be required to "retrofit" a nine stand shaft:

1) flip the new, currently available boat-style rocker shaft 180* so that the oil holes are on top of the shaft.

2) "notch" (identification witness Mark) the "top" of the shaft at each end just like the oem part. Or some other form of marking that would be shown in an accompanying instruction sheet. That is to show the correct assembly position when positioning on the head.

3) addition of n=4 additional holes for the rocker shaft/tower bolts. All rocker oiling ports are in correct position.

4) remove core plug from one end of the modified shaft and clean internally to remove grinding/drilling debris.

5) install replacement core plug.

6) treat with preservative film for corrosion inhibition.

I just did a "grind" spark test onna scrap shaft to check "hardness"...it is!

I've exhausted sourcing the bushings for the rebuild of the welded rockers themselves. Those two rocker assembly rebuilders were right...no parts available. That is a very thin steel shell bushing with the bronze friction surface with machined-in oil channels what do you think you could do for that refurbish but keep it cost effective?? The steel shell would also require a tig weld to retain.

let me see if I can get them sourced new production.

An all bronze bushing would be ok right?

The "rebuilt" welded rockers used the exact same bushing config as the original production stuff did. Iirc, the bushing had a "perfect circle" logo as a product id. So those bushings were available to the rebuilder trade back when. About ten of the welded rockers I have in the collection now are "rebuilt". That can be discerned by having a replacement bushing pressed in, then a touch of tig added at two distinct point for retention. Obviously there is a problem in some cases with the press fit once the worn bushing is removed from the welded rocker and a replacement is inserted.

Why don't ya take one of those welded rockers I sent ya and push on the bushing and see whatcha think? I got plenty more scrappers to experiment with!

An even better solution for a rebuilt welded rocker...is the "adjustable" push rod tip deal that we're also working on! That would allow re-arcing of the valve pad to clean that area up, just like the rebuilders did.

We are currently selling remanufactured rocker assemblies for $225 a pair. They are not online yet but will be soon. As soon as we get caught up on a couple of orders we should start stocking a pair of each type on the shelf(or until our rebuilder runs out of stock).

The "rebuilts"...those are nine stand shafts with welded rockers??? Did ya put these in stock before the supplier up north of ya quit doing 'em? Is that rebuilder doing welded rockers again now and I didn't know it??? If so, I feel like a real dumazz! When I contacted them they told me no to supplying welded rockers (and replacement shafts) any longer!

Yup! I've been calling them and placing orders and so far they have not had a problem filling any of them. They will build them in any configuration that I ask(for example a 9 stand assembly with boat rockers).

This is outstanding news! Sorry I regurgitated mis-information as regards availability!

Where are ya regarding reconditioned rocker stands and bolts...I have about thirty here now ready to install right onto a shaft...mixed between oiler stands and non-oiler stands...and another fifty+ to work through. Do ya want me to send down some now? These will be bagged in sets of nine including the appropriate designs for one shaft assembly.

How much for rebuilt nine stands with boat style rockers? How are the boat style rockers refurbished? Do you sell used boat rockers that are in good shape? If so, how much? I like roberts idea of redrilling the 4 holes. Could somone sell those altered shafts? Im going to the machinist tomorrow, so im going to ask how much it would cost to convert the shafts. If done in bulk it would probably be pretty cheap. Would there be any legal issues?

I finally dropped off some parts at the machine shop, but the machinist wasn't in. So, I couldnt ask for a quote on converting the shafts. Robert did you have any luck drilling those holes?

No problemo partner. Easy as pie for any machine shop. There is one thing I thought I'd mention ,a royalteee is due payable to me for each drilled shaft. I done copyrighted it an intellectual property already. I'd say $10.00 each. Watta ya say??

You ll have to speak with my atternies, my attournys, my lawyers. So I thought about it they would have to be called reconditioned since they are mfg,ed by another company. Right? And I plan on taking any profits to the dog track, so I couldn't back a warranty.

The machine shop will need a real good carbide cutter to do it. The shafts are hardened. The cutter if he dosen't have one will not be cheap..........:(

I have one or four....... Or... Um??? Somthing around there. :winky:

Latest news is they are out of welded units again. It looks like soon all we will be able to run is boat rockers.
