Engine Paint

This isn't really engine tech, but it is engine related. Want to get a recommendation for a readily available rattle can red paint that's close to IH engine red. Need to repaint my valve covers while they're off for engine repairs.
 
I used this paint from car quest in irwindale. They had a couple on the shelf. Perfect IH red. See the picture below

Actually this post is exactly what I was just about to post. I have my valve covers off right now and also was looking where to get the IH red!
 
Actually guys I was talking to Jeff today and he said ihon stocks a great IH red rattle can paint.:icon_eek:

he is playing catch up with putting items on the sight so if you don't see it give him a call. Literally 100's of unlisted parts.

I bought some valspar IH rattle can paint at tractor supply and I was really pleased until I got some carb cleaner on it and it ate right through it. :cryin:

anyone know of a good match for IH red that really stands up to use on an engine?

I was wondering if I could top coat the valspar stuff with some of the clear duplicolor engine paint in order to protect it.

Thoughts?
 
The only paint that will resist the automotive chemicals is a fully catalyzed finish grade paint. Good thing is you can have any color matched that you want. Bad thing is by the time you add up the paint (1 qt), reducer and, hardener you'll have spent $100.00.

I have several stock colors I use and black is the one I use the most. They are all the same make and line so I have only one reducer and hardened. I use ppg omni solvent born.

In my opinion unless you are building a show grade car/truck stick with spray bombs.

Robert,

I'm happy with the color, just not happy with the peeling mess I was left with when the IH red valspar paint got hit with carb cleaner. I might get a can of the duplicolor clear and topcoat the valspar to see if it will protect it. It would be worth a try I suppose.

Personally -- I do not think any current paint formulation will stand up to carb cleaner...

If you care about the engine paint, you probably should take the carb off the engine... To use carb cleaner on it.

An "engine paint" May stand up a little better to carb cleaner.

Of course everyody knows 99% of the paint job is in the prep.

I guess the point I was trying make was that all spray bomb paint lacks any form of isocyanate or hardener. The hardener is what allows paint to withstands the solvents that it is soluble in like xylene, toluene, methyl ethyl ketone, alcohol, etc. These same chemicals are in carb cleaner and a fully hardened automotive grade paint will with stand melting under spot exposure.
