74 Scout II rebuild/restore

You should cut it before the boxes are built.

What are you turning, the nut or the set screw?

Unfortunately I did not know that was going to be an issue when it came to installing the Borgeson Joints. I thought it would have been a simple bolt on application. The power steering gear was rebuilt prior to re-installing the steering column and the Borgeson Joints. From the picture I included on the last post. Did I leave enough of a nub? Do I need to have the steering gear rebuilt/re-adjusted. Should I purchase a replacement steering gear from a reputable source? What would be your suggestion? Thank you for the advise.

I've recently retired and I'm looking forward to getting this on the road. After the steering is 100% satisfactory its off to get the AC system charged then minor body work finished and painted.

Did you install the springs after or before the Cut and Turn?

Put an angle finder on your steer arms and see what the actual caster is at ride height.

Winchested, the springs were attached before the cut and turn. I was in a crunch for time to get the Scout off my prior owners business. The business was going to be sold sooner than expected. I could not find any one local to do it. After getting the Scout running and driving, it was wondering left and right approaching 30 mph. I pulled the front axle out and took to IHPA for the cut and turn. I explained to them the suspension that was on it. After installing the front axle after the cut and turn it drove 95% better. It only gets a little squirrelly on bumpy roads. I will have to get a angle finder and do what you suggested to see where the caster is actually at. Thanks for the advice.

Hi Zaedster, thanks for the reply. I did have the steering gear rebuilt. Was it the best shop in the LA area, I'm not sure. They did mark the setting with a white marker and I can adjust it back. To me the steering wheel had to much play and seems to be better now. When I installed the Borgeson Joints I did have an issue making it fit with that nub sticking out. I can't remember if I discussed this on the phone with IHPA or thru the forum. I was advised to cut that knub off to make the joints fit. There's a picture attached of my cut on the nub. On smooth roads it drives great one hand on the wheel. It's only the bumpy roads that make me uncomfortable.

So far, over time I've only driven the Scout up to 50 miles per hour. Most of the 250 miles of it have been up to 35 mph. I would like to install a tach on it so I don't push it to hard. I'm not sure what the RPMs on the engine are with my set up. I'm running 33x10.5x15 tires with 4.10 gears, TF 727 thru a Dana 20.

It could be very well that I need a new steering gear.
at 50 MPH your at about 2,500 RPM
at 80 MPH your at about 3,500 RPM

I would personally send the box out, maybe to PSC and specify your application, and stiffness you like in the steering feel. I would start there.

Also, it is worth noting tires have a significant affect on road handling. Maybe try out a different set of tires also.

Very true,

What pressure are you running in the tires? Maybe drop em 5 lbs and see if it helps.

Great suggestions above. I find new tires on my Scout are a bit squirrelly for the first few hundred miles, then they settle in nice.
