Push Start vs Ignition Switch Replacement

I am working my way through my recently acquired 72 Scout. I think the ignition switch has gone bad (the one mounted on top of the steering column, inside the dash). I was planning on going with a push button start. Do I need to replace this switch if I do the push button, or will I just simply be bypassing that switch when I install the push button? I just want to avoid redundancies in buying parts.

There are other circuits in that switch, so if the switch is bad they might fail too. The switches are cheap and easy to replace. If you have an automatic, the neutral safety switch and/or the wiring to it may be the cause of a no start situation.

I am definitely exploring all options… Turn the key, nothing happens. No clicks, nothing. Battery is good (measures 12.8v). Wiring in this Scout is a mess. I took a peak at the NSS, but right now I’m not sure how to test it. After testing the starter solenoid I got a slight crank with power directly from the battery. I also managed to get a slight crank with the key, but I was jiggling that rod that connects the ignition lock cylinder to the ignition switch (maybe a coincidence). Was just going to swap that switch out since it’s inexpensive and easy, but wanted to ask about the push button so that I don’t buy something I won’t need. If I still need that switch then so be it.

You need the switch regardless, as you still have to have the key in the run position when driving. The ign tumbler/ lock cylinder and ignition switch are easy to replace.
