Axle seals - front Dana 44

As I was going through my Dana 44 front end, I noticed that both my inner axle seals are shot and in dire need of replacement.

But - there is a catch. I am running 35 Spline inner axles. Also, this d-44 front end is a stock Scout housing that was converted to SOA, stuffed with an ARB. Yes, ARB makes a 35 spline version of thier air lockers for the Dana 44 housings - I have 3 of them.

My current inner axles were made by ctm, along with thier u-joints. And the seal surface is 1.5" o.d. On the axle surface itself. I have not been having much luck with contacting ctm at the moment, which is why I'm posting here

Hey chris, just a thought on the cut & turn method, why not just drill the weld out at the axle housing an carrier housing ( hole in axle tube),and turn it there? Was just thinking that after seeing the cut & turn method for years.Jeff

The plug welds at the center section are nearly impossible to 'drill out'. I have seen people ruin drill bits, mill bits, grinders, etc trying to remove them. The best way is to plasma or arc-gouge them out - which ruins the tubes. So most home users do the cut and turn...

try this one:

napa #15292

Closest crapa store to me is an hour, or so, drive. And most of them, if they have it in stock only have one available and I need two.

I agree about how cutting out the plug welds at the center section, the tubes would get messed up, and tend to be dificult to accomplish for most home mechanics.

Scooter, call napa in vallejo(half hour from you) 707-557-1600, usually they can get them next day whatever it is, by about noon.

Then you can come check Joe's Scout at my house, awaiting drivshafts. I could pick up the parts for you if you want to meet at my house, I get a discount, call me let me know, frank

I just had them order the seals in, they will be in at 1:30pm tomorrow, I'll pick them up. About 21.00 with tax.

Thanks for the look out on that franked. As we talked on the phone - it turns out that those napa seals May not work anyways.

Btw
I have seen these same seals suggested before on other forums. But I never followed through in getting them for the simple fact that the specs for those seals claims to be 1.516" inner diameter. And as I stated in my first post, my axles are 1.500" outer diameter for the seal surface. That .016" clearance between the two components May be just enough for fluid leakage.
So, im basically back to square one of in search of proper seals. Unfortunately ctm is not getting back to me. They were the ones who made the axles and sourced out for the seals way back when I had my front end built. Had I known at the time, I would have ordered a few pairs.

get the inner ones frank suggested & then get a set of outers....

I have a pair of these in the d60 flavor to install when I do my inners at the IH work day in wc on 5/13.

outer Dana 44 axle tube seal, 2" id tube, 28-30 spline axles

I would go that route. But as I mentioned in my last reply, that those napa seals May not seal properly on the axles that I'm running. I.d. Of those seals = 1.516 and my 35 spline axles that I'm running have an o.d. Seal surface of 1.500 exactly. Which would leave just enough clearance for oil seapage out between seal and axle. And if there's clearance between those two then if mud or water gets past those outer seals you posted what's stopping the contamination?
