Hi everyone, I am new to this forum and looking forward to some really good info swap and ideas. I have a 79 Scout 4x4 xlc with the good ole' 196 with the t-19 and 4.09 gears. About 20 mpg in the country. Uses no oil. I love this engine. It runs smooth. Owned several scouts iis before. I also have on a stand an older version of the 196 that came out of a glassic replicar made in florida. For those who don't know what they are, they were 1931/1932 Ford copies with a fiberglass body on a Scout chassis. They were made from 67-84. The standard engine was the 196 though others engines were available. My engine in the rig has 166,000. I do have "some" lifter noise. I read what has been posted here. I think just a set of new ones would work. Anyhow the other one has low miles, supposedly, and it was in two private collections. Harrahs casino in reno for 15 years and 17 years at a private one here. Long time setting. I turned it by hand and it is free and all the rockers move. Should I fix the one in the rig with lifters and valve job or have the machine shop freshen up the older one is the big question here? I ran a compression test in my rig though not a leak down. I have 15-40 syntec for now. A cold test on a hot 108* day came out at 158, 150, 148, 160. The older one does not have the correct oil pan/dip stick or pick up tube and the flywheel has been drilled for a smaller 10" clutch instead of the 11". Need to get it drilled for the larger one or replace it. I plan on using an electric fuel pump with my pressure regulator. I do have the older fuel pump with it. Also having the t-19 being rebuilt as it would grind from 4th to 3rd. It had a bad syncro dog in it. About an inch long and 1/4" wide with an ear broke off. So all new parts! Which would you choose to run? Also the flywheel on my current engine is toast and needs repair along with a new ring gear. I have had it about 8 weeks. Just need to know which way to go with this. Also would an rv cam help in low end power and will it trash my mpgs? Is a header a good idea and what size exhaust should I use? Going to use magnaflow. Nuff questions. I'll wait to hear from you good folks here. Thanks very much. Hgtraveler
