What makes a Scout a Scout???

This is a California smog related question of sorts. If I am part swapping with another Scout and one is smog exempt and one is not, how much of the non-exempt "stuff" can be swapped over until that exempt Scout just becomes the non-exempt one. I mean, could you simply switch the vin numbers as if you replaced every part of your 73 with a 77 and call it good? What is the breaking point if there is one?

In kalifornia the smog equipment and emmisions requirements stay with the vehical it self. An exempt truck is an exempt truck really. On the other hand a non exempt Scout can not be made non exempt nomatter how many nonexempt parts you bolt on to is. In fact that will cause the non exempt Scout to become illegal to drive on the street. Don't you love sacramento :mad2:

swapping vin numbers would be a federal offence. Major no no. I would never recommend somebody attempt it. Yes guys do it but on this form we will stay away from illegal activities.:icon_domokun:

on an emmissions regulated truck like say a 1978 Scout II if you swap a newer engine (2004 ls series 5.3 from a 1500 Chevy) into the Scout, the Scout will be required to up hold all restrictions and limits of the newer engine and needs to retain all of the new engines equipment and vapor recovery apparatus.

Way esier to swap in a newer truck engine in to a truck than swap in a passenger car engine into a truck.

Smog exemption is pre 1976 now. I just transfered my Scout(1975) from Nevada to cali with no problems...although now I'm gonna have to transfer it back(dammit!)
