A power brake booster check valve failure?
Before I spring $200 for a new booster/master cylinder, I thought I might try replacing the $9 check valve.

A bad check valve would leak vacuum down when engine vacuum goes away as in wot or engine being shut off. A bad booster would usually give you a high hard pedal that you can usually hear leaking to the outside

My symptoms are these:
longish pedal travel.
Higher than normal initial pedal effort, but not as much effort as a "no boost" situation. (I.e. Engine off)
disproprtional effort required for harder stops. It takes about twice as much pedal effort to stop in 80 ft vs 100 ft from 30mph.
If I really stand on the brakes I can get one rear wheel to skid, sometimes both.
Any guesses?

Those sound like the symptoms of my bad check valve before I replaced it. Sometimes the pedal would feel real soft so I would give it a quick rev then pedal would feel a little better.
Plus, I had never replaced it on my Scout so I went out the couple bucks and saved myself the expense of jumping into a new booster.

I swapped in a new check valve today and nothing changed. So I'm thinking that it must be the booster module. I wish I could have made it to the meeting last night. I would have asked some of the guys to drive it and then give their impressions. I'm used to it now and my opinion is jaded.

Guess I'll pony up for a new brake booster and see you all at the wrenching session. If not sooner.:icon_cool:
