Transfer case vent leak

I've got some fancy vent that I bought from summitt on the tailshaft housing on the transfer case. It keeps puking oil, do the vents with the wire mesh in them work better? Is there another place to mount the vent?

Generally I've found that when the transfer case's vent is puking oil; the transmission's rear seal is leaking.

The oil level in the transmission runs higher than the oil level in the transfer case. In the event of rear seal failure, the transmission will lose oil to the transfer case.

A wire mesh in a breather will help "de-mist" any venting air, and keep some amount of dirt out.

I've got got the same problem. It's just started here recently. It's not enough to make any marks on the garage floor but it is on the rear output housing.

What all needs to be done to check the rear seal on the tranny? I've got a r&r kit coming Wednesday so the tc will be pulled.

Btw: not trying to hijack this thread, just curious.

With the transfer case off, and the bull gear is off the transmission's output shaft; it's easy to see the seal in the adapter plate.

To replace the seal, it's easier to do with the adapter plate off of the transmission. Be sure that there are no grooves in the spacer that slips over the output shaft.

Gotcha, I've got a pivot pin leak so the adapter plate (aka-tail housing?) has to be off to get that pin out. It looks like my reseal kit comes with two texas shaped gaskets. Is one for the tc to tail housing and the other tail housing to tranny?

Really appreciate the help.

I'm looking at my books and I don't see a seal between the transmission and transfer case. Am I missing something in the book?

Page 3/ tranny section. Look at the end of the extension housing behind the bearing. I believe the ext. Housing shown is different for out 4x4 trucks but the seal is still there(or two right). Fyi, I pulled my tc last night and there was no tranny fluid in the transfer case and no leak at the seal so it can vent without having a leak.
