Trail spares checklist

I'm always amazed at what randy is able to bring on the trail for spares. I found his list from the hollister thread and decide to put it in a 1 page format that can be used as a check list.

I too have had a 1 page check list. After reading randy list, I see I need to add a few things.

You can take these and modify it to fit your needs. I have a copy that I put in the glove box, so I can look at when packing.
I find having a 1 page list make it easy to go through.

I'd ad a spare spindle to to either list (a spare stub fits inside nicely)....

I've been on a few trips where the stub shaft goes & takes out the spindle.
Happened to me in sept...
I had a spare, but it was the end of the day & near the trailhead.

I would carry a spare spindle if I had one. I carry more tools then parts thats for sure.

I updated my list..

I threw a spare d18 bull gear in the ammo can.
I then noticed/saw/remembered that at the beginning of the summer I added a power steering shaft (the one connecting to the pitman arm).

My truck is usually packing the following:

complete long side and short side front axle shafts with joints
drive flange
1310 and 1350 drive shaft ujoint
random belts and hoses

pre-greased front wheel bearings

spare FI fuel pump
3-4' FI 3/8" line and hose clamps
couple random efi sensors

gallon of antifreeze
quart of 80-90w
3-4 quarts oil
pint of brake fluid
quart of ps fluid
can of wd-40
can of brake cleaner
can of carb cleaner
5 gallons gas

tool box full of tools

hi-lift
4-way lug wrench
40' extra cable
tarp
blanket
trash bags
ziplock bags

I never have.....
But if the teeth were to strip (without destroying the case), it would suck to be stuck without.

Having the right part at the right time can turn a nightmare trip into a fun trip.

I find that when on the trail it easy to make a huge mess of your tools and spares. So I have everything in tool bags to help keep it organized. I have several small tool bags and a few medium ones too. One for wrenches, one for sockets ratchets, extensions and adapters, one for most all other tools, one for recovery gear, one for welding equipment/rods, one for my air pump, one for the emergency sleeping bag.

I was at hollister one year when a Scout II guy (george form modesto) torn up his bull gear only. No spares but if there had been, that's all he would have needed to completely total his truck. The tank trap had not been too friendly too him.

I probably carry too much stuff but I'm completely gun shy. Everything I carry has at one time or the other failed on me or been needed.

George was tough on bull gears. He needed one while on the old sluice at the rubicon. As for you having too much, I dont think so. Esspecially when I break down.
