Tractor electrical question

Ok, I am an IH guy but I have a brother who I have not converted yet!! I know but what can I do:shocked:

anyway, he has a Ford 8n with 6 volt positive ground, generator and voltage reg. It discharges when it runs more so if you turn the lights on. I tried doing the jumper wire trick on the voltage reg to polarize the system and it worked but it does not stay that way. He uses it for mowing and lucky if he runs it once a week. If he sets the polarity (jumper) it works until it sits a while, but the battery still has a charge. I checked it with a volt/amp meter and when the guage says it's discharging it is.

What would cause it to loose it's polarity?
Sorry for not being an IH related problem.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

ron

Common kinda stuff with generator systems ron! Hell...the same stuff was used on ihc products too!

In actuality, I think what ya got going on is a generator that is "worn out" and a voltage regulator with points that need to be cleaned (using flexstone or emery cloth strip) or the regulator replaced.

I'd bet that at least one of the brushes in the generator are worn to a nub.

Also...make certain that the battery itself has the positive post going to ground, completely different compared to later systems that were negative ground.

Iirc, positive ground products disappeared from the vehicle marketplace worldwide after 1967. Last one I had was a '66 landrover series iia. Most folks in the bizz today have never heard of positive ground systems.

Thanks michael; I have found wiring diagrams for 3 different versions of the 8n. I will pass along your suggestions, but since the tractor is 230 miles away it probably won't get fix untill I go down there. Not only is my brother off track with the Ford, he is also a dentist,,,, not a mechanic:icon_wink::yesnod:
