Tires and lift

Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum and scouts in general. I want to buy a 79 Scout II with a 304 and 4 speed manual. The owner is throwing in a set of 31 inch "super swampers", I don't know what brand. Will those tires fit with what I am assuming is a sagging stock suspension? I plan on putting the Rough Country 2.5" lift on it in a couple months but I have nowhere to store extra tires until then.

31" tires is about max for stock sagging suspension. Maybe 32", but that's pushing it.

Are you planning on wheeling this rig? Or are ya street driving? If you plan on mostly street/highway driving, those "interco" super swampers are gonna be a bit rough ride and loud as heck.

I'd like to start wheeling, I'm on oahu and have heard of a few good trails but haven't seen them myself. I might just keep the extra tires chained up in the back until I can check them out. For how much off-roading I will probably do it might be better to sell the m/ts and get some 31" a/ts. Would the 31" tires and 2.5" lift put much strain on the drivetrain? And will the spedometer be off enough to worry about correcting it?

The 79 should have Dana 44's front and rear. They can handle tires up to 33" with out problems. Going any bigger you will need to start looking into up grades in both axles.

I'm not sure exactly what the stock tire size is, but 31" tires shouldn't effect the speedo calibration too much. Give or take a few mph's. 2.5" lift you could even go to 32" tires. I ran 31" tires on my 72 and 74 on stock oem springs. Biggest issue on the IH front axles is the 0* caster. Any type of lift will dampen it even further. At some point you May concider doing a cut and turn on the knuckles. Plenty of write-ups on the subject. The m/t's should be good for the trails compared to the a/t's

Thanks for the info. My commute is really short and I won't see that much highway time. I'm looking forward to getting out to do some camping and fishing, it will make a sweet surf wagon too with the bikini top.
