tips on bearing pre load

i do alot of 4 wheeling and last trip out, the hub bolts must have been loose and 4 out of 6 broke and as they broke the holes got egged out. so hub needs replaced.

does any one have any tips on setting the wheel bearing pre load. service manual says to TQ to 30lbs and then back off 1/4 of a turn. i havent done this in a long long time and i dont remeber how i did it last time, it was over 20 years ago but do those instructions seem correct.

that sounds right. it's been a while since i did it. i do remember doing less torque on the second or jam nut. my book says 125ft lbs! that seems excessive. i did 75.

so it all went pretty simple, just time consuming. especially installing wheel studs. i dont think these can be beat in to place, or im just not strong enough with a hammer. so i used a blot and shims and wrench and pulled them in to place.

so a question, i bet the lock washer over the first nut. near the bearing now im starting to think i should have bent the tab over the second out side nut. does it matter what nut has the tab bent over it ? ?

out side nut has 130 foot pounds on it.

inner nut was had 30 foot punts on it, then backed off 1/4 a turn

Studs: I use a 20 ton press to remove/install studs.

Washer: You can bend it over each nut if you wish.

The lockwasher is supposed to be bent to retain the outside nut from backing off.

ya on Sunday i took it back apart and put the washer on the correct way. i dont know why in my head i screwed that up.

if a guy didnt install that locking washer or did it wrong would the nut ever come off or get loose ?

You might want to look into Stage 8 DNA-44 X-lock spindle nuts. Kind of expensive at around 75 bucks a spindle, but you only buy them once, and never have to worry about those stupid bend over tabs again. I just hate hammering on stuff that shouldn't need it. They are out of San Rafael, made in USA.
