Timing a 196

I've got a 1967 Scout 800 and it's got a 196 4 cylinder. I think I got the carb working, but it seems to be stumbling when I throttle it. When I put a timing light on it it runs rough at 5 btdc. Seems to sound better at 25 atdc. Any ideas? What are the signs of a worn out distributor?

Make sure you disconnect and plug the vacuum advance port.
If you have a dial back timing light set it to 0. Set the idle speed to 700. Recheck using cylinder #1 (front) no way 24* atdc (retarded is right). Set base idle timing to 8 btdc. Watch the timing as you increase the rpm. You should see a steady rpm dependent advance of the timing (Mark moves toward the passanger side) up to about 2800-3000 rpm. You should see
34* total advance when it stops advancing.

After resetting the timing to 8* reset the idle speed and mixture to best vacuum or highest speed and reset the speed to 700.

Let us know how it goes.
