Thick Ring & Pinion

For 76 Scout II d44, bought 4.09:1 thick gear to be used on original 3.54:1 carrier from IHPA. Planning on spartan type locker in the future. Torqued ring gear to carrier and using setup bearings went to jockeying with shims and whatnot to set em up. Not quite thrilled with the pattern yet but that's not the issue. I noticed that the (thick) ring gear covers the hole for the shaft thru the carrier so I need to remove the ring gear to install spider gears (or spartan in the future).. May have to go spatan a little sooner than planned.. Now the question.
1. What's the best way to remove the ring gear without doing any damage?
2. Can the ring gear bolts (still new ones from install kit, just been loctite'd and torqued) be reused?

On another note, most of the what I've read says to set pinion preload to 10 -20 in lbs or 20 - 40 in lbs depending on new or used bearings. The Yukon spec sheet supplied with the gears lists 6 - 9 in lbs or 14 - 19 in lbs.. Seems a huge difference. Which specs should one use?

Most ring gear ratios on the d44 will require that the ring gear be removed in order to remove the center pin. Use a brass or soft deadblow hammer to unseat the ring gear from the carrier. As long as you did not over-torque the ring gear bolts yes you can reuse them but after 2-3 times I like to replace them.

As for the preload specs the 10-20 inch pounds for used and 20-40 inch pounds is correct and what is written in the IH service manual.
