Thermo Quad carb. questions.

Hello. I am not trying. To re-invent the wheel. However, I also have never been into/rebuilt a t/q carb. I have read the posts. My quest. Is when ur fishing for the sweet spot, counterclockwise for richer or poorer. Just curious. Have a remanded t/q acts weird. Wish I had the genuine article. But, from what I read, welcome to the Scout-IH world.
Have an off idle hesitation. And, after a semi-long idle. Loads up. Any suggestions will help. Have read the stickys.
79, 345, 727, t/q. Timed on #8. Last reg. 96.
Oh! Followed Jeff's advice. R&red district. Cleaned up weights and lubed. Timing swings great. Any suggested. Thanks.
Metering g rods; clockwise richer or?
Thanks again.

What you describe is a classic condition of the fuel bowl wells leaking raw fuel through the interface where they are attached at the point of manufacture with an epoxy material that deteriorates over time. Raw fuel seeps from the wells right into the intake manifold plenum resulting in a super-Rich condition at idle and tip-in.

Review the thermoquad/spreadbore sticky thread for a discussion of the fix.

Ok. It actually is pretty simple. Solved the bog problem. Big thank you to mr. Maben. Here is the short version.
79 Scout, 345, auto, stock other than 4" SUA.
Truck last reg. In 96. The guy I got it from never heard it run, 2yrs.
Had qjet. Don't know from what. Didn't fit this app. Bought a remanded replacement t/quad from parts house. Tjruck ran poorly to say the least. Bought a manual and started testing. Vac. Advance on dist. Leaked. Bought a reman. From Jeff at IHOnly. Thanks, Jeff. He also told me to check advance mechanism in dist. It was frozen. Installed new vac. Adv. And repaired all other leaks. Back to square one. Set base timing. Set base idle, and mixture. Test drove to full operating temp. Still had bog. Set metering rod adjustment. To factory setting. (gotta have a place to start) started turning metering rod screw clockwise until no bog in park. Test drove again. Still had bog but better. Turn screw two turns at a time until no bog. Then back out (counterclockwise) until slight bog. Turn screw clockwise 1 full turn. Rechecked idle and idle mix screws. Truck runs great. Thanks to all. Oh yeah, pull plugs when hot after a good run. Should be slightly tan. Not white(lean) not brown(Rich) your plugs never lie. Thanks to all for the help. Happy scouting.
John
