T-98 stupid ?

Working on a transplant, shifting the transmission, it feels like it has 5 gears plus reverse. Are t-98s 4 speed or 5 speed ?

With that shift pattern you would have a IH 5 speed either a t-34 od t-35 wide or t-36 close. Is this a Scout/Travelall/or pickup? If this is a Scout, then someone went to a lot of work.:winky: the t-98 isn't a 5 speed

Based on dash picture, it is a loadstar or some other "large" IH -- defintely not a Scout / traveler / pickup / t/a -- with a t-35 / t-36.

Wrong shift pattern for a t-34 (od) -- if diagram on the dash is correct.

1 2 od
r 3 4

is the t-34 shift pattern.

Vehicle would "bog" badly shifting from 3 - 4 if it was a t-34.

Generally, a t-34, t-35, t-36 does not "fit" in a Scout (or a traveler), but I am sure somebody has tried / done it.

They are "large" truck transmissions -- probably close to twice the "volume" of a t-98.

Wouldn't both patterns be wrong. The pattern would be an up to down sequence right?? Like this? I don't really know, just seems right
correct
1 3 5
r 2 4

wrong?
1 2 4
r 3 5

wrong also?

why the u turn from 1 to 2 and so on:icon_eh:

It is a 73 loadstar I got for $375 b/c the pinion is broken. Came with a ic 392 and supposedly a t-98. I am installing in a 68 1200c. The awd 1200c has a 4 speed in it but I was hoping to upgrade to a 5.

That shift pattern is for the t-35 and t-36, not! For the t-34od, the t-36 is the better of the two for towing, it has that "magic" gear every one wants between third and fourth in a four speed, the t-35 is really nothing more than a close ratio four sped with a granny gear added.

The shift pattern painted on the dash is correct for a t-35 / t-36 as goldie states.

The pattern that I listed is correct for a t-34 -- "5th" gear up.

1st and reverse are non-synchro.

Because of this, 1st and reverse May not engage without the engine running. I sometimes cannot get my t/a into reverse without letting out the clutch

"issues" for putting a 5 speed in a 1200:

I do not think that the clutch is an issue -- my t/a w/t-34 has (came with) a 11 inch clutch.

Bell housing -- 5 speed bell housing is unique to the 5 speeds, so you need that.

That means there May be some issues with the clutch linkage -- May be different -- I do not know.

The 5 speeds are probably 2 - 3 inches "longer" than a t-98 / 4 speed. You should measure the two -- from the back of the engine block.

So, you also probably need "new" driveshafts....

And, I do not know how the transfer case is mounted, but there May be changes related to that -- move "backwards?.

Probably should check the "yoke" on the back of each transmission to see if they are different -- as far as "mating" to the transfer case. The loadstar possibly has an e-brake drum on the back of the 5 speed transmission, also.

A comment on Robert kenney's post about shift patterns:

I think you are thinking about "modern" 5 speeds -- used in cars and pickups.

As stated above -- 1st and reverse are non-synchro.

Someone more skillful than I can shift these transmissions from 1st to 2nd on the move well. I have done it a few times, but the result, though successful, is not very "graceful"

my t/a (2wd) has almost 31 in dia tires and 3.73 rear axle -- 3600 rpm in 1st is about 12 mph.

I use first to go up or down steep dirt roads in the desert -- and even then not that frequently -- first is "my" 4wd low...

My t/a is not the vehicle for really bad / difficult dirt roads.

Yep, I know when I don't know sumpin and the big IH iron is one place I need to do my learning. :icon_eek: my eyes and ears are open.

I guess you would skip the gear sometimes? I would be the guy you would look over at and cringe as I cleaned the teeth of.

Skip first gear "always" -- in the pickups / t/as unless you are on a really steep hill / really heavy load.

I do not know about the loadstars etc, but I doubt you would need first that often in them, either. (they have a lower rear axle ratio, of course.)

clarification overkill: first gear in the 5 speeds is sometimes referred to as "compund low" or "granny low". It is the "same as" the first gear in an IH 4 speed wide ratio manual transmission except in the 4 speed, first gear is "syncrhonized".

For reference:

3600 rpm in 2nd gear in my t/a = 20 mph....

I have maybe used first gear in my t/a 500 times in the 35 years I have owned it -- and some of those were just for:gringrin:

7.17 1st gear...dang..would love to have that in my rig...any1 know if a t35 can possibley have a Dana 20 tossed on the end..lol..thats a dreamy thought right there..that kinda low 1st gear is like a dual 20 case..of course only in 1st but nice set of gears for rock crawling for my diesal

The transfer case on t/as and pickups is "divorced" (NP205? / np202? (single speed), so I do not think that you can "hook" a dana20 to the back of the 5 speeds.

It has been a couple months since I have been under my t/a (2wd), but I do not recall seeing "anything" that would lead me to believe you could "mate" a transfer case to the back of it.

But, your first "problem" would be the bell housing. I assume that the diesel bell housing is not the same size / bolt pattern as a sv v8 bell housing.

As stated above, the 5 speed bell housings are unique to the 5 speeds.

I think it would be "cheaper" / "easier" to buy one of the "atlas" / "rock crawler" aftermarket transfer cases to get the "low" gearing.

Plus, there are not that many IH 5 speeds "laying around".

Lol I supose u are right..it was a nice thought...the diesal has a 2 part bell housing..its like a bell cut in half..the motorside is Nissan bell and clutch..and a short half the mounts to the varible 4 speed..its a wild set up..still uses the same tranny as would be behind a 345 IH
