swepco 502 question

I have the 502 additive and plan on using it when I first fire the engine up and break in the cam. My question is that according to the directions on the bottle it states to add it to the oil once engine reaches operating temp. Should I wait for this or add it with the oil before start up? I will be priming the oil pump etc. I just wondered if it would be best to have it circulated in the engine since it has not yet been started. I will be using a wix filter and am leaning toward running the delo 400 or rotella t for break in since I will be running it afterwards (whichever's cheaper:) ) or would this be overkill on the zinc content? Thanks in advance.

Steve,

thanks for giving me the opportunity to answer a good question and offer some advice!

First of all, a little history....swepco has produced the 502 oil improver for over 30 years, way before the time that today's concern for cam break-in due to low zinc was even thought about. For some reason, they have not changed the section on the label about adding it to the oil after warm-up. Over the last 23 + years which I have been selling the product line, shops (including engine builders) and individuals have added the 502 to fresh oil before firing up the engine and everything seems to work normally.....other salesmen I have contact with have seen the same results..... I'm talking, literally millions of bottles!

You mentioned that you were going to use rotella t or delo 400(whichever is cheaper), if you can still find it, and really want to use one of those, I would recommend trying to find one which is rated "ci-4" and not use the "cj-4" (the newer one) as the zinc, phosphorous and calcium levels in that grade are substantially reduced. However why not go the way you can get the most protection and use swepco 306? It has higher additive levels than the ci-4 rotella-t or the delo 400 have, plus the base stock is much more robust......yeah, yeah, yeah, I know you said "cheap" - but think of it as an investment instead of an expense. After your first oil change, which I recommend at 1,000 miles or less, you will be able to extend your drain intervals to 5,000 miles using the swepco 306, so put a pencil to it and see which one actually "costs less."

adding the 502 to those "other oils" will not be an overkill, but remember that when you do an oil change, you will have to add a fresh charge of 502 to keep up the added protection.

Thanks dick,
I had considered the swepco 306. I should have said easily available, not "cheaper". I plan to change the oil after cam break-in. Right now I am looking at getting it up and running. I May go with the swepco for the next oil change. The cost is comparable I am sure. I already have 2 bottles of 502 so I will use them for now. I agree with you about "investment or expense" I won't actually use any "cheap" oil after the amount of money and time I have in the engine. Thanks again, and if there is a place I can get swepco in the d/fw area it May sway me to make the switch sooner.

Steve, I just wanted to say I just switched to swepco in both my scouts. I have not put on very many miles yet but one thing that really surprised me, my engine noise was reduced, I will say a conservitive 20% thats got to say something about swepco. Even cold start ups the motor is quieter. I will leave the selling to dick, so far I am impressed.

Steve,

I have sent you a private message with some personal information.

Ron,

thanks for your kind words in adding to the post, I know we talked about this before, but it is also nice to see in print!
