Supension Question - 1974 PU

I have two 1974 pickups. One is a 1/2 ton and the other is a 3/4 ton.

I want to lower the trucks in the front and rear, as they only see street driving and only haul occasional sheet goods for the shop.

There are not any aftermarket lowering kits, like there are for the "big 3" and not being very knowledgeable about the IH suspensions, I was wondering if anyone has any input regarding the best methods of lowering an IH pickup.

I am not opposed to swapping components from another brand as long as it doesn't take a mechanical engineering degree and would allow use of dropped spindles, etc, but will want to retain the IH sway bars. I assume that some of the aftermarket kits for the rear axle could be modified to work... ???

any input would be appreciated .

Well... I guess IH owners don't like to lower trucks.

Time to go over to binderplanet and check in with skunkwerks where the rest of the non-traditionalists hang out...:icon_wink:.

I personally don't have a problem with lowered trucks. Some look very good when lowered to a still functioning usable stance. I have a non IH truck that will maybe a slight lowering.

It's just that I don't see or work on enough IH trucks yo know what would work. Wish I had a little more info for ya.

you did not state 4x4 or 4x2, so since you didn't specify, we will assume they are both 4x2 .

in 1974, the 4x2 IH trucks were coil springs in front and underslung leafs in back .

to lower the front, cut off some of the coil .

to lower the rear, install a block between the axle and the spring.

When 4000lbs of batteries were put into the back of my 1210 t'ette, several mexicans came out of the shop and commented that was a cool low-rider I had. It wasn't that low though as there still was 1.5" before hitting the bottom out bumpers.
