I recently bought a '76 Scout II. I've noticed that it drives fine at slower speeds, but when I get it up to about 40-45 mph the steering starts to shake, or wobble side to side. The faster I go, the worse it gets, & when I get up to about 50 mph, I can't go in a straight line at all, & have to slow down for fear of crashing. I was told by a local mechanic that this is a common problem in off road vehicles from this era, & that I need a steering stabilizer to fix it. After looking through this forum, & other places online, it seems that a steering stabilizer May only be a "band-aid" fix for other problems. Just wanted to know if others have encountered this, what was done to fix it, & whether, or not a steering stabilizer is actually needed.
