Speedy sleeve installation

I have a badly scored surface on the rear of the crank on my rebuilt 304. So I am going to put a speedy sleeve over it. The sleeve has a flange on the back side that mates with the installing tool they supply with the sleeve. Once I get the sleeve well onto the crank, I can't see how I will get that flange off. It is scored to break loose, but there is very little space between the block and the crank for access. So, if anyone has done this, how about a little advice? Since I am asking, I am also concerned about installing the seal over the sleeve. The sleeve is thin, but it does have a leading edge. Should I be concerned about damaging the seal lips when installing it over the sleeve? Is there a "good" way to do it? Thanks, pineneedle

You should remove the rear main bearing cap for the task. You can then replace the cap side seals upon reinstalling the cap. Long nose pliers can work well to peel the flange off the speedisleeve.

Be very careful removing the flange; it is very easy to distort the sleeve. Leave it on if at all possible. Sliding the lip seal over it should not be a problem; lube the sleeve and seal with some assembly lube or engine oil.

A piece of plastic pipe, with the id machined out so it will slide over the od of the speedi sleeve works very well for an installation tool. The tool provided with the sleeve is a bit short.

If you have already installed it, I hope it went well.
