Common urban myth-generated question regarding old iron.
If the rig is original under the hood, the only smog-related systems present that could be actually serviced are the pcv system and the a.I.r. System if equipped.
The pcv system is totally passive and has no effect on engine performance as long as the pcv valve is functional. The pcv component on that vehicle if original May be disassembled and cleaned, that is part of periodic maintenance, or what we used to call..."tune-up". Do not toss it away, you cannot find a replacement that will be correct calibration.
Any alteration/modification to the emissions system is technically illegal, both for 49 state vehicles and kalifornikate only versions. If...you are going to remove the a.I.r. System, the vehicle May be used only off-highway inna legal sense and we do not advise doing that since we are a commercial business involved in maintaining and repairing motor vehicles. And this statement has nothing to do with whether your particular vehicle May be exempt from an annual smogging requirement in the air quality attainment district/zone/region it might be registered in.
There is absolutely no performance advantage to removing the air injection, likewise, it's totally passive in operation and is downstream of all other engine processes.
