Smog Issue (Thermostatic Air Cleaner Missing)

Hi,
I recently bought a 77 Scout II in oregon and brought it back to northern California. The guy I bought the Scout from recently had a Holley 2300 carb installed and a 10" round chrome air cleaner. When I took it to get smogged they didn't pass it because the Holley air cleaner on it is open air and I guess not legal for California emissions. Although I have the old air cleaner the diameter of the new carb is larger than the old one so it doesn't fit.

Is there a riser or adaptor that I can use to connect the stock air cleaner? Or are there any other vehicles that use a closed style air cleaner with a 5 1/8" diameter that I could look for at a pick and pull type place?

Recommendations? I need to get this thing to pass smog.

Thanks,
Robert.

As Chad stated, the silenced/heated air cleaner assembly from a pickup or Travelall ('69>'75) equipped with a 4v carb will fit that carb perfectly.

The oem smogerator was a Holley 2210/2245 series, completely different mixer, different air horn diameter. If ya try and use the "conversion" adapter for the air cleaner/carb air horn, it will raise the air cleaner so that a major collision will result when ya try and close the hood. The air cleaner ya need has an opening measuring 5-1/8", the common "aftermarket" size.

Is the carb the p.o. Installed a Holley list 0-7448, center hung float bowl unit??? If so, that carb is not emissions legal in any state, much less mexicalifornicate as far as visual inspection goes. It May very well pass the tailpipe test...but everyone knows the emissions regulations don't allow improvements where the bottom line is better numbers over oem, the visual inspection crap rules and ya never git to the dam tailpipe test!

Shoulda left the rig and yoreself in orygone!

Chad/Mike,
the carb is the 0-7448. Which according to the Holley website is a 2bbl. I didn't think it was legal in cali but the place I got the smog didn't seem to care about that. And if I can get away with keeping it I don't mind. Ez-smog did the tailpipe test and it passed that fine. It was just the air cleaner that he said needed to be replaced.

I would bet Jeff has one, give him a call. He is actually a nice guy too. But don't tell him I said so. Don't it to go to his head.

Thanks Chad. I will give him a call.

Btw, I was looking around the site and I read through your posts on your Scout. It sounds like you are building it for exactly what I would want. Nothing extreme but capable in all areas. It looks to be an awesome Scout when you get it finished. How much would you estimate this is going to cost you when you are finished?
How is your wife doing?

Robert.

Wife is improving everyday now that we have her at home but we still have a very long road ahead. Thanks for asking. It is really hard for me to estimate as I have the extreme advatage of calling the ismails family but if I were to estimate everything that is getting done and if I had to pay someone to work on it...... I would say 20k easy probably much more. One thing I will say is something Jeff preaches to everyone that comes in.. Everything on these things is either wore out or rotten, everything!! And seriously if you have a dollar figure in your mind about a build double it at least!! Hell that even happened to me. I planed on doing this a little at a time and spending a couple of grand on it total to begin with. Now I am into my rear end alone for more than what I intended on spending to begin with. To be honest unless you can afford it or can do all the work yourself you should just do a little at a time. Part of me regrets taking mine as far down as I did now that the weather is nice, but when I am done I will have what I have always wanted and will be happy, it is just a bitch getting there. Ok, long answer to a short question but hey thats me!!

Chad,
I just called and Jeff in fact has the air cleaner that should work for me. Thanks again for your help!

I'm really glad to hear your wife is improving. I know how hard these things can be. Keep us posted and if you need extra help on the Scout just holler. I'm a novice but I learn quickly.

My wife would kill me if I spent that kind of money on my new toy, but I had got the Scout with the intention of learning to work on it as I go and I can invest small amounts over time. Hopefully I won't bother you guys too much with my tech questions. ;-)

cheers,
Robert

Good glad he could help you out. I think you are wise to do it in little bits. It is not nearly as easy for the ladies to track the $$$$$ that way :ihih: :icon_wink:
