Slow starter

I am not sure which forum this should go in...so if it is misplaced, feel free to move it around.

I have a '75 Scout 2. It has been a great truck. The problem that I am having is that it takes a while to fire up. If the temps stay above 35 or 40 degrees, it usually fires up without a problem. But if it is below 30 or just really cold...it will take me turning the key and trying to fire it up, 7 or 8 times. Usually takes about a minute of trying to start it. I pump the gas before I try and start it and work that, but it still takes a while to start up. After it starts up, I can drive it fine and then even later in the day after it has sat for a few hours, it would then start up fine...but it just takes a while initially on really cold days.

I am not sure if this is typical. Is this a carb issue? Any thoughts on what I should look for? Thanks!

My Scout would hesitate (maybe 1-3 turns of the key/2 pumps of the gas pedal) and was a somewhat slow starter but I recently installed a remote solenoid and definitely noticed a big difference in the hesitation-there isn't any now.....turn the key and it fires right up.

Hope this helps but I can't comment on cold weather stating since I'm in hawaii....

There are always two areas of concern regarding your issue...the starting/ignition system and the fuel system.

I'd first verify the condition of the entire starting/ignition system as jonesy mentioned. This includes cleaning and servicing all connections throughout. I'm certain you will find some issues if this has not been done recently! Pay close attention to both of the connectors for the wiring harnesses in the engine bay.

Once the ignition system is verified, then do the same to the entire fuel system, from the tank through the carb. Your description tells me that it's very possible that the choke system for the carburetor is non-functional.
