I have a 75 Scout 2 with the tf727 automatic and a single speed transfer case. Is it possible to swap the transfer case for a Dana 300 that was on a Scout with a tf727 ?? Thanks for any help.

Short answer is no.

Long answer is "maybe" with a lota transmission work! The output shaft and coupling system for the 727 in the Scout II with the model tc-143/code 13143 (single speed) married transfer case is totally different as compared to the same components for either a d20 or a d300 transfer case.

It's always possible to swap the d300 transmission output shaft into any 727 case assembly, but involves complete dis-assembly of both transmissions to do so. It's far easier to simply use the 727 that is already set up for the d300, that is a direct bolt-in for the earlier transmission though you will also need the control set for the d300 and modify the tranny tunnel to allow it to install.

Just got off the phone with Isa Ismail (Isa's IH) and he's shed some additional light on this question. Thanks Isa!

Isa has done this swap in the past. He tells me the special "coupler" used on the married t-407/tc-143 transfer case does have the same spline count (23) as the d20/d300 bull gear and is retained by the same nut and belville washer.

The drawings I have for reference of the coupler segment show it to not be a 23 spline item.

So if you have the correct bull gear for a t-407/727 d300 application, this should work for ya.

Sorry for posting "kinda" incorrect information in the first response.

I like your second answer better than the first. The Dana 300 I was going to get ended up being a Jeep d300(kinda figured). I have heard that IH only has built up a few low geared Dana 20s.
Is this true? If so is this something you sell? I dont mind a Dana 20. I just dont want a "part time" transfer case. Thanks for the info.
