Shake-Down Strawberry Trail Run

I know there are a few of us that recently installed new t-cases in our rigs. Was thinking a day trip on an easy trail would be good to test things out. The strawberry trail isn't too far and is pretty easy with a few challenges along the way. This coming Saturday (July 11th) or the following Saturday (July 18th) work for me. And no it isn't a requirment that you have a new transfer-case, so anybody who is free is welcome to come along.

I guess I better hurry up and put my junk back together then:cryin: I'm no farther along then the last time you saw it.
Guess I better measure for a driveline or two and get them on order this week.

Well, what are you waiting for Craig? We can't wait forever!

Craig, let me know how far you get this week. Also let me know if you need any help with your junk. I'm on furlough Friday this week if you aren't working and need a hand. Depending on what you get down this week will determine if we go this Saturday or next.

Worked a couple hours on it last night. I got the e-brake cable installed ( it was removed a few years back) I think I spent more time looking for it. It's not hooked to the caliper yet, as I need to fab up some stuff. I measured for drivelines and calling them now. Thanks for the offer, but I need to work Friday.

I ordered the drivelines and they will be ready Friday at the latest.

to do list.

1) fab and weld up the 3" exhaust.
2) fill t/c with oil.
3) install drivelines. ( might need to cut oil pan to allow room
for driveline  )
4) finish brake cable install. ( need to fad a mount to hold the
pivot)
5) install shifters and cut out tranny tunnel cover.
6) fix leaky rear axle seal (leaks on brake disk.)
7) install some sort of skid plate. ( have metal on hand)

just ride shot gun:skep:

edit... Not much done tonight as I teach a class on Wednesday's nights. But I did got some exhaust work done, not quite a 100% need another hour during the daylight to finish up.

What's your progress? Should we plan to go this Saturday or next?

Drivelines showed up and the tranny pan needs to be modified. I pulled the pan last night in prep for tonights mods. Wish me luck on welding the cast aluminum.

Items to finish before test drive.. Hopefully tonight.

1. Connect up the exhaust pipes.
2. Fill t/c will oil
3. Install rear driveline. ( need to go to driveline shop and get longer 12mm flange bolts)
4. Install t/c shifters, cut hole in tranny tunnel cover and install boot.
5. Hack chop weld tranny pan and install, then fill with oil. Check cooler connections and connect transmission shifter to cable and install boot.

Items to finish once everything looks good.
1. Connect up cable to t/c brake. ( still need to mount dog leg pivot point, parts on order)
2. Check for loose bolts.
3. Install skid plate. ( still need to make that)

pushing hard to just get it off the driveway.

I can ask if I can leave early from work. You still avaliable today?

So it looks like the run will be next Saturday, Craig's list of things to do took a little longer than expected. Jesse and Craig did some nice work on the triple shifters. I'm sure Craig will post up pics later.

Since I had some free time I added an electric pusher fan. Was having some air flow issues at low rpms which caused the Scout to run between 200 and 210. So far the added 880cfm the 12" fan produces keeps the temp right at 180 or lower during normal street driving. I'm hoping that the fan and low gears (4:1) will generate enough airflow to keep the motor cool on the trail in 100plus temps. If I find I need a little more flow then I will put the 18" 7 blade fan on. My cooling system is now made up of a high flow aluminum radiator, fixed 17" 6 blade fan & shroud, electric 12" pusher fan, tranny cooler, power steering cooler, hood louvers, cut-out inner fenders, and a rs 180 thermostat.

I adjusted the kick down linkage last night. Still have a lot of little items to double check, but should be read to go

Took it out for a spin last night and the tranny tunnel gets very warm now that the exhaust runs under it. I have part of the exhausted wrapped and double walled, but might need to do more.

The tranny shifts way early, so need to figure out what to adjust there. I read the manual and adjusted the kick down linkage. But that did not seem to help.

I added about 5 turns to the kick down rod length, but no test drive yet. Trying to get the tranny to not shift in to 3rd at 10 mph. I did get the tunnel cover installed and sealed up. When driving it the other day and it was like 4 or 5 hair dryers blowing in the cab from the old t/c hole. Hot as hell. So I added a second layer of insulation on the tranny tunny side walls and cover while it was open. Plus put some foam padding on the cab floor. I think the exhaust going under the tranny was adding a lot of heat. The plan is to drive it to work Thursday for a longer test run before the trip on sat.

Had a good time Saturday. The strawberry trail is pretty mild, but there were a couple of spots that were a little tricky. All t-cases worked good, I know I was happy with my 4:1. No real breakage, my issue was still trying to keep my engine cool while crawling. It was pretty hot out, truck ran nice and cool on the freeway never got past 185, but after an hour or two on the trail, the temp went to 215/220. Once back on the freeway it went back down to 190. Problem has got to be the lack of cfms through the radiator. Next up...fixed flex fan. Only other issue was Jesse's broken hood latch. Now on to the pics.

Citizen's arrest! Sir was that two scoops or one?

I was bummed I forgot the camera, thanks for posting pic's.

I had a blast, up until the drive home as my Scout does not have a/c. The air coming through the windows was like a blast furnace. I had a frozen milk jug in the ice chest and gave that to my daughter to hold trying to keep her cool. Her face was bright red. I going to put a swamp cooler on the
Scout for these 100+ days.

Yes, thank for the pics Matt. I finally got my hood open at about 10:30 that night. I had to modify a 1/2" thick piece of rod to stick up into the latch. That was a great time, I don't know what was better, the characters we met on the trail (up? Up?? Up??? Do you mean up?), or Craig's stories.

Aka (cool master j). (I didn't think I'd be in that picture...:icon_lol: )
