On Saturday I pulled one of the gas tanks on my 1968 project Travelall. After draining the decade old gas into approved containers for proper disposal at a licensed facility I spent a good part of the morning scraping off the sprayed asphalt and then scrubbing the remainder with a wire wheel. There were a couple of pinholes where the tank rests on the metal support straps. I welded on patches and then set to work on the reconditioning process.
We began by putting some dog chain in the tank and then dw and I did the hokey-pokey for half an hour. And she complains I never take her dancing! There was a brief scare when the chain got hung up on the baffle and I couldn't get it out, but it did finally let go.
Took all afternoon to go through the soaking, sloshing and draining steps described in the directions. The last step, coating the inside with sealant, involved patient mainuplation of the tank, over and over, to assure that all surfaces received a coating.
The next morning the outside of the tank got a spray with the complimentary zinc coating and looks better than new. With the locally purchased muriatic acid and acetone I had about $75.00 invested. Its a good project and given the rust-colored toothpaste crud in the fuel lines, tank selection valve and fuel pump, together with the quantity of rust&crud we shook out the tank, any rehab of the engine and drivetrain without addressing the gas tanks would be wasted effort.
The sending unit appears to be intact. I soaked it in the de-varnishing solution bucket and almost all of the scuz rinsed off. However, the float has a hole in it. As usual, the friendly folks at napa were stumped. Which brings us to question of the day. Anybody have a suggestion where a replacement float (and gasket as well) can be obtained?
