Scout 80 Axle Break

Well, a few days ago the short rear axle broke on my 62 Scout. Right side. Dana 27 axle. It broke at the end right at the end of the keyway.
I found 2 used axle and have them in hand. I am fairly mechanical, but have not worked on rear ends. My general question is how hard is this axle to remove? Any step by step procedures I need to know? I have not taken the diff cover off yet, but will in the next few days.
Thanks so much for any help

You are the luckiest man alive to have 2 of these axles that don't have broken axle shafts! I have not done it personally. However it is my understanding that it can be a ugly s.o.b. To get the keyed hub off. Good luck!

A little heat and a press works wonders if you have one. Going thru the same thing with my '61 as we speak. The press was the key, but word of caution, the hub will pop/fly off, so leave the castle nut screwed on the axle at the end of the shaft a few threads. I tried the hub pully/remover only to mess up the end of the shaft at the threads, luckily not too bad.

edit: reread your post, axles should just pull out once the 4 bolts on the brake backing plate are removed. Might need a slide hammer to if they have been there awhile.
