S80 Squirel Cages

Whats with the dual squirel cages under the hood of my s80? I have seen photos of several others that only have one. The second intake of the box on those is fed to the bulk head. Mine is capped off with the standard fix all duct tape from po.

Are both fans needed?
Were there options for only one?
Anything else you can tell me about the setup or links to info?

I've seen early 80's w/factory driver side box (squirrel cage and heater core) and later 80/800's with passenger side box. The only one I've seen with both is mine and that's because I stole a box and plenum from a 800 and installed it in series with the early 80 box to boost the heat output. (gets cold at 8000 feet)

got pics?

Not a great one. But here in red circles you can see the fan boxes and in the blue circle you can see the duct is capped off.
It came from Colorado so I imagine they needed the extra heat, both are hooked to the water lines for heat.

Looks like somebody added in a second box like I did with mine.

The capped off part on the engine side plenum you've circled would have been plumbed straight to the front of the Scout as a fresh air ram type intake.

Under normal operation with just the drivers side box you could open the vent control the drivers side and get either heated or cool forced air. Or you could open the vent for the passenger side and get ambient temp outside air. You could open both I suppose but it would just blow in one and back out the other.

Do you have a plenum that crosses from passenger side to drivers side on the inside of the cab? Just in front of the shift levers?

Like everything else, that rig has been workedaround!

The original heater is the one on the driver side fender (those were used in '61>'62 versions with the external air distribution duct across the engine bulkhead).

The heater on the passenger side is the '63>'65 version and uses the duct inside the passenger compartment that runs across the lower edge of the dash.

The alternator has been moved to the driver side, looks like the jury-rig power steering pump is mounted in the oem generator (alternator) position.

So even though mine is titled as a 63 it must have been made in 61-62 since it has the exterior air box. Will either fan set up work with this air box? Is one or the other better in regards to either function or repair?

I am only asking so I can remove one or the other to make some room for things in the future.

Looking at the peripheral components on the engine, I see an early '61 production engine (notice the water neck??)! The heater mounted on the driver side will work only with the duct that runs across the bulkhead in the engine bay.

If you do not have the interior duct across the base of the dash, then the heater mounted on the passenger side won't work and neither will the defroster ducts.

One is no better than the other, both were somewhat inadequate for the job at hand.

This is as I said...a total butch job with many parts scabbed in from something else. Get yourself a mt113 parts list and a cts 2302 service manual and you will be armed with all the background info ya need for these piles! "title" and registration data don't mean squat on vehicles manufactured (not "sale" date) prior to 1968 per se, many states had no title law and only a registration procedure, texas did have both however...but not louisiana, mississippi, alabama, etc. In texas (if the rig was originally sold in texas), it could have been titled by either the chassis number or the engine number which further confuses the issue. The so-called "vin" system did not exist at that point, I've posted about that many times around here.

Thanks michael, thats what I needed to know. Mine is obviously the earlier version. I knew about the titiling/sales delima from some other threads in the forum. This one came from Colorado when I got it, but I am not sure where it was originaly sold. I had a delay in getting my service manual since some one snaked me on egay. I just ordered one yesterday from binderbooks so hopefully I will see it by the end of the week.

Anyone wanna buy a later model heater fan? Lol... I will pull the one I don't need, and see if it works and what kind of shape it's in, maybe I can trade it somewhere down the line for something else I find I need.

You mentioned in the previous post about my alternator being on the wrong side. I was just eyeballing it the other day and noticing how flemsy the bracketry was. It's a real hack job, looks like two brackets welded together. No real bracing to speak of for support. It's a wonder they could keep from slingin belts off of this thing. That combined with the power steering pump not being inline wit hthe other pulleys and on a slight angle. I will have to figure out some better bracketry for the accessories.

That heater stuff is always good trade material for the folks dealing in restos!

Over on "the other" forum, about three years ago, myself and another s80 noob over there developed an extensive thread documenting all the nuances and differences between what we referred to as the "early" and "late" Scout 80 variations. Totally invaluable information which I wish I had extracted the text from and had saved inna doc on the hd! Same for the build thread for my own s80 with tons of documentation, most of the pics I post here were actually generated stretching back over five years.

Even the "welded" oem alternator mount for the s80 was flimsy until it was later converted to the cast iron variation. The original s80 used a delco generator, not an alternator.

The best alternator mount to use on a 152 /196 inna Scout 80 is a a/c compressor mount for an sv engine, either Scout II or a pickall. Those mount the compressor on top with the delcotron swung below. Very rigid! The Scout II with 196 engine with an a.I.r. Pump mounted it on top of that mount instead of an a/c compressor.

Well I pulled the heater box out from the passenger side. Is there anything that goes over the many small holes in the firewall where the unit was mounted? Or do I just need to fab up a plate to cover it?

For the short term, I use "gorilla" brand duct tape to plaster over the penetrations, that keeps engine compartment fumes/carbon monoxide out of the passenger area.

For the long term, you can find many sizes of snap-in molded rubber or vinyl plugs that will neatly fill the holes until you are ready to detail out the engine bay and possibly weld up any unused penetrations.
