rookie mistake?

Removed engine and trans all in one piece and had to remove gear shifter( 1964 c-1100). When I placed shifter back into top of trans, it dropped into place but would not move. Is this something that I should worry about? Planning on separating trans from motor to have it refurbished. Could I have miss-aligned the gears somehow and if so how can I correct it? Thanks.

Did you just remove gear shifter or the whole top cover ? I assume it's a 4-speed ? T-98 ? DID you drop the pin down in there when you pulled shifter out ?

I just removed the shifter itself, the pin is still in the housing. THe shifter has a "ball" on the end with a slot for the pin. When it was shifting I want to say it had four positions so I assume a 4-speed?? Everything fits nicely together ball, spring, and then screw on cap but it wont budge and I don't want to force it. I will try and take a photo or two and post them.

Not sure how to say this without looking like an idiot but oh well. When I took the shifter out it was in 3rd gear, when I placed it back in I stuck it in 2nd gear. Once I looked down in there and saw the two spots it could I realised what I had done. Thank you guys for taking the time to answer my question. A lot of us out here really benefit from your wisdom and knowledge.

4 positions or an H would be a 3 speed ! 5 spots x ,4 speed. Reverse is also a gear. Glad you got it taken care of.
