Reverse Shackle questions

I recently went into my local offroad shop to see about installing a reverse shackle kit that id get from here(IH only) and they tried talking me out of it. So I went to another shop and same thing. They said it will handle like crap on road?? Also my 35's appear to have tons of clearance but they said they May rub fully stuff and locked one way or another. I also have seen other trucks off road with reverse shackle and dog leg shackles. Whats the purpose of dog legs and opinions on reverse shackles? Thanks.

Btw I have a 72 spring over with stock springs and cut and turned 44 for proper steering and drive-ability. No high steer yet but soon. Again thanks

There are people out there who will argue this debate until they are blue in the face and still yet neither will be right nor wrong. Obviously we are big proponents of reverse shackle otherwise we would not offer this kit and install them on darn near every Scout that comes through our doors. Biggest pros to installing a reverse shackle are better ride quality and less likely to bend a leafspring upon a hard impact. Cons, well there are none and that is my opinion of course. Best argument that I have heard is when climbing the forward shackle will put more force on the object it is climbing over. Lets face it folks, IH's are heavy(IH=iron heavy) and there is more than enough weight exerting force onto any given object. If you want opinions about how your Scout will handle call the various other Scout shops out there and see what they say but again you will probably run into the same arguments.

As for dog leg shackles they are sometimes used in order to have clearance around normally the front body mounts. Toyota guys first came out with these due to a longer leafspring upgrade they installed and Scout's are the same, if you install a longer front leafspring you May need the dog leg shackle to clear the front-mid body mount.

Thanks Jeff. I know you guys are "IH only" and know IH's. And read a little about the CPT kit that it does move axle forward a tad to clear rear of front fender well. That was also another argument. I will just not listen to all these other guys ans rely on you and the other IH members here that love the kit. Thanks again.

For being a customer of ihon who has installed two of these kits on my own personal scouts, one word comes to mind = awesome.

As Jeff mentioned, the arguements for both side can last for hours. I even got into a debate on it a couple years ago. But from my own personal experience it was a major improvement in the way the scouts handled. Both on and off road the shackle reversal handles flawlessly. The first kit I installed was on my 74 daily driven Scout. Handled great on the highway, and I drove it on the rubicon and in hollister several times. Handled better than I expected. Also, for me, the kit solved a lot of the wondering that these "iron heavy" beasts are prone to have. I would recomend it

If this was there response - try a better shop :nono:

the one thing not debatable with a rs is the improved ride and handling.

Does any vehicle manufacturer still put shackles in the front??

If I owned a road/street worthy Scout it would have a rs installed asap.

I've been looking at the same kit. But I'm not sure when I should do it. I'm going to be putting a set of Dana 44's under a 1962 model 80. And going SOA with them on the oe springs. Would like to do a reverse shackle as well. But not sure for all the changes and such. Should I do the SOA and get the new axles under it with everything as is. Then do rs kit? Or just do it all at the same time? Just concerned about getting every thing lined up right with no reference point if I cut it all off and do it all the same time.
Your thoughts? A write up that addresses this?

I'm going to guess the 44's are out of a Scout II?? Regardless here in the shop we would set up the reverse shackle to whatever axle we would be using. Since you are performing a SOA at the same time and have to deal with spring perchs and I assume a cut/turn of the knuckles we would first install the reverse shackle, then set up the axle to work with/match the reverse shackle set up. Hope that all makes sense.
