1300B, 1967, 4WD, 266 V8, Gas. I replaced all brake lines, hoses, wheel cylinders, brake shoe return springs, brake shoe hold-down pins, cups, springs, and wheel bearings. This was done in order to address a problem with brakes locking up. On short runs this does not occur (or is not noticeable) but I recently took a 30 mile trip and the rear brakes locked up. I let them cool down and was able to make it to my destination. Since the rear brake shoes were worn to < 1/8th inch, I decided to replace them. I noticed that the "spring, brake shoe adjusting screw" was stretched over the "screw, brake shoe adjusting" (star wheel). These springs, (one for the left, one for the right) were on the truck when I bought it, and mounted the same way. Although the part number in the catalog seems to refer to this spring, (the yellow spring in the picture) it does not appear to be the one illustrated in the IH parts manual. The parts manual shows a spring with long hooks clearly stretched under the star wheel. I tried to do this with the red spring but was unable to. Either red or yellow spring must be hooked over the star wheel and appears to interfere with its turning. It also appears that running the spring under the star wheel would interfere with its turning as well (or possibly lead to unintended turning of the star wheel). Could this be the cause of the brake lockup? How else would the spring be run? I carefully compared the new brake shoes with the old and they are exactly alike. The spring will not run under the star wheel on either shoe because of the placement of the holes in the shoe. The shop manual is of no help on this; it has a drawing of a brake assembly that in no way resembles mine and it is labeled "typical". I am looking to replace the star wheel brake adjusters, in case that may be a cause, and they may well be original, but no one seems to have that part.
To recap: 1. could spring routing interfere with brake adjusting screw operation?
2. How is this spring supposed to be run?
3. Any suggestions on where to buy spring brake adjusters?
4. Could defective spring brake adjuster cause brakes to lock up?
Thanks!
