Question 2: front axle

The spindle has a distinct lip on the bottom of the trunion that the outside bearing fits on. It seems to me that this means that the bearing has been spinning on the spindle, causing the wear lip. What is the right fix? Should I just ignore this and put it back together as is?should I machine the spindle and get smaller bearing? Should I get a replacement spindle?

So, Jeff,

to begin, thanks for the patient and helpful answers that you (and others, particularly mm) have provided to my questions.

If you don't mind, I would like to press you on the answer you gave to my question about spindles. The two spindles on this axle have ridges on the bottom in the area of the spindle that supports the inner race of the outer bearing. I presume that ridge results from the bearing spinning on the spindle. Maybe I am wrong and these spindles are fine. I have a tendency to be really finicky. I'd guess that the ridges are .003 to .005 high. What is your opinion about reusing them?

Also, since I have your attention, can I buy two of those ball-joint adjustment collars from you? The two on my axle (d44 front) were completely rusted up, and broke in two during the difficult process of getting them out.

Thanks,

john

Its our pleasure to help you with your IH problems.

If you can post a detailed picture of your spindle as it May help in deciding whether to replace it or not. From what you are describing the spindle does sound like the wheel bearing race spun on the spindle due to most likely loose wheeling bearings.

The ball joint sleeve tool is available online - ball joint tool for Dana 30/44 - IH Parts America Scout - or feel free to call to order.
