Projects that don't sell

So, as many of you know I am trying to sell my rock crawler. I've had it on and off craigslist for about the last year with exactly 0 interest. I am at a loss of what to do with it. It is a functioning truck, you could get in it and wheel it today with no problems, but with the way the economy is, and it being a very unique truck I have the sinking feeling it's not going anywhere.

So, what do I do? I don't use it anymore, I don't have weekends off and didn't really ever use it all that often anyway. Now it's just sitting in my parents yard taking up space, space that isn't mine and they can use. I have no where to store it, and the house hunt is going about as slow as the truck crawls. I know that the truck is only worth what someone is willing to pay, but I really don't want to sell it for much cheaper then I have it listed. I guess I am just frustrated and really wanted to vent, I am ready to move on.

Hey carl,

I understand what you're saying. My Dad just handed the keys to his rv hauler over to the buyer from montana this last Saturday. He had it for sale for well over a year. Same thing with the trailer he used to pull with it. On both occasions the buyer called, talked to Dad and then immediately sent the money. My point is when the right buyer comes along it will just fall into place. You hit the nail on the head when you said it is a unique vehicle and you are going to have to find the right guy. And now for the obligitory I will take it off your hands for you for nothing satement! Seriously carl good luck with the sale and I hope it works out for you quickly. Also a shame to see a well built Scout not being used.

I understand your frustration -- and I do not have any good answers...

You are learning a frustration lesson in the marketability of "vehicle projects".

You do not want to "give it away" and you have put a lot of time / money into the vehicle...

From my perspective, there are "limiting factors" to the sale of the vehicle -- of which you are painfully aware

number of people who want to buy a Scout - few

number of people who want to buy a rock crawler Scout -- even fewer (most probably wnat to build their own)

number of people (guys) who want a 4cyl engined crawler (though there is the subset of suzuki scrambler(?) fanatics)... Even fewer

you could part it out, but I doubt you would get much money for the "pieces"...

The same "problem" exists in other areas of the automotive world..

For years, fully restored corvairs did not sell for the money the owner had in them (I think most restored vehicles do not sell for the money people put in them.).

In recent years, I have heard a select few corvairs have sold in the $20,000. - $30,000. Range.

A couple months ago, a guy approached me when I was filling up my rust bucket corvair at a gas station talking about a corvair advertised in the local weekly "auto trader" newspaper for $30,000. So, he thought corvairs were worth a lot of money... Tried to convince him otherwise, but he had $$$ in his head... I did not even try to tell him that someone who had a true $30,000. Corvair would not be advertising in the local "auto trader" and the car might not even be worth $10,000. Of course, I am "old" and there is ebay and craigslist nowadays, too..... Lol

some thoughts on the subject, but no real help...

I've got the same dilemma with mo. I've thought about selling it to finance another project, then realized I can't get 10% of what I have in it. So I decided the best course, is to start having some fun and use it.
My advise is to make the time to have some fun with it, while you continue to try and sell it. Maybe you don't have weekends but you can find some one to go with ya on week days, occasionaly. Who knows if ya get back into it ya might change your mind about selling, as I did.

Carl I'd buy it in a heart beat and set my good body on it.

But until the economy picks up and debt is paid off those funds are spoken for.

I'm seeing the same thing with a friend selling his stock sr2 - even people who have the funds available are either sitting on them in case of layoff or using them for paying off debt they were happy to carry just last year.

For now the one I've got will have to do and I'll keep feeding it nickels and dimes.

Send it down to me, I will wheel it all over with a for sale sign in it for you.

Lol, thanks all for the advice! I am just frustrated and it feels good to vent a bit to people I know really understand. Last week I was tempted to pull the rebuilt 392 out of my pickup, bolt it up to the 727/300 combo in the crawler and dump it all into the diesel chassis! Then pull the axles and rest of the parts off the crawler and haul anything I didn't use to the scrap yard. At least then I'd have a running and driving truck! I am blowing it off at this point as a moment of desperation.

Well, the truck was sold yesterday! The new owner is extremely happy with it and she's very enthusiastic to learn to wheel it. I have mixed feeling about seeing it go, but life has moved in a different direction. I am just glad someone is going to get some use out of it.

Let me be the first to offer congratulations.

maybe one of these days you can build a volvo crawler to replace it. :d
